Superman #139

A bathyscaph is hit by a red kryptonite meteor and Superman has to save it - at first he sends one of his robot duplicates; but it's unable to stand the pressure 10 miles underwater, so Superman must go down himself to rescue the men aboard.
 
Now there's already a lot of annoying and improbable things here - the kryptonite meteor falling right near the ship, then through 10 miles of ocean to score a direct and disabling hit on the bathyscaph (already an astronomical coincidence) but then Superman

  
Now all that is before we get to what really irks me about this story. Basically, when it comes to Superman stories, any story that features red kryptonite as a plot device ranks right up there with Mr. Mxytlpk stories as some of the dumbest stuff ever written in these comics. Red kryptonite - for those who don't remember - is kryptonite that can have any weird effect on Superman that the writers want. "We want a story where Superman turns into a sea lion - I know, RED KRYPTONITE!" And, this story is basically a retrospective of red kryptonite stories. Like one of those episodes of a sitcom they release during the holidays when all the actors and crew are on vacation so they take file footage and make an episode full of flashbacks. Yeah, that's how this story is, except the flashbacks here are all to other stories featuring red kryptonite. So basically we get about 5 pages of flashbacks to corny red kryptonite stories before we get the resolution to this, the corniest of them all.
 
The only thing that keeps me from giving it 1/2 star is Curt Swan's beautiful artwork which is totally wasted on this story.
