Superior Spider-Man 13 No Escape Part 3: The Slayer & The Slain

    COVER ART: 3.5/5

CAMUNGOLI/DELGADO team does an fine job on this cover. What I like the most is the little claw details on Superior Spider-Man's hands. His outfit, much like his current disposition, is much darker. The Lizard is drawn superbly as well. The symbolism of Spider-Man & the Lizard going back-to-back is expertly done. This isn't the best cover of this week (7/7/13) but there is a lot of symbolism here and that gives this book some extra points.

    STORY ARC: 5/5

DAN SLOTT & CHRISTOS GAGE team up to wrap up NO ESCAPE from Spider Island. We continue the journey of SMYTHE, the SPIDER SLAYER moments before his Slayer-Bots free him from execution while at the same time healing and upgrading VULTURE, BOOMERANG, & SCORPION (whom we remember had his JAW PUNCHED OFF by Spider-Man a few issues back). Smythe uses his newly healed and upgraded team to aid in his escape attempt from Spider-Island.

The Superior Spider-Man has thought of everything though. Every avenue Smythe tries, SSM has already thought of and has a contingency plan to block it, because as Otto Octavius, dying in a cell in the same prison, he already had thought of the same escape routes.

An eery conversation between J.Jonah Jameson and SSM occurs in this issue. JJJ charges SSM to "finish the execution" of Smythe. Smythe is responsible for JJJ's wife's murder and he intends to see him die today, no matter what. SSM promises to "finish the job" and thus gains immense trust with JJJ. This trust is misguided; however, because SSM eventually uses that conversation to blackmail JJJ into giving him Spider Island for his own personal use at the end of the book.

What I enjoy about this book is how we see SSM evolve. There was no part of Peter Parker in this story so are we to believe he is totally gone. We know SSM has killed before, but Peter was always there to create a pause in Otto's actions. SPOILER This issue, when Smythe believes he has Spider-Man in a catch 22, believing Spider-Man is not a killer, we Smythe believed wrong. To save the civilians being attacked by Vulture and to ensure Smythe would not escape, SSM rips one of Smythes razor sharp appendages off and stabs him in the heart with it, killing his mortal body! This is symbolic because there was no pause, no delay. This was all Otto, no Peter. This is so evident in the symbolism of the art shown here. Notice how the "amazing" symbol on Spider-Man's back is torn through. This is to show that there is no more Amazing Spider-Man left, only Superior.

Once SSM has defeated Smythe, in his Physical Form and his conscienceness, we are left with a fully transformed Spider-Man, the fully realized Superior Spider-Man. We see on a boat ride back to the city SSM recorded JJJ giving SSM the order to kill Smythe. In order for that footage to not be released, SSM blackmails JJJ into giving him the keys to Spider Island. We see SSM is now totally isolated from his connections to the world, to Peter Parkers connections, and left to his own accord in an island laboratory. Evil Genius criteria all met, oh wait, don't forget the minions! SSM makes a call to Minions-R-Us and orders a fleet of foot soldiers all in uniforms that will match his NEW SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN COSTUME! (see minions and new costume below)

    STORY ART: 4.5/5

GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI does a Superior job penciling this issue. There is a great amount of detail and symbolism drawn in this issue. There are very little complaints I have as it relates to the art. It fits Spider-Man very well. The only awkward character is the Lizard. There is a great drawing of him in such detail, but the face/mouth does not fit well. He seems more like a rat, or a doberman than a lizard, and there is a dead on image that makes him look like his brain is on the outside of his skull. This could be nitpicking but I still gave the art 4.5/5 The first splash page, which I have included, between SSM and Spider Slayer is fantastic.

OVERALL: 4/5 This is a must get for any Spider-Man fans, even if you don't have the back issues of this story, I believe this book will get you hooked. The new outfit is coming, the minions are coming. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Great review though I felt it was a little rushed, and a bit sloppy on Slott's part so only gave it a 3. The series was showing promise (as I hated most of the starting issues) and I hope this isn't a sign of it dropping in quality again.

@raw_material I really do believe Parker is going to find a way back into his body. This is the only reason I like this series so much. We are being taken farther and farther away from Amazing Spider-man and deep into the world of Superior Spider-Man. Every issue Doc Oc gets a little more bold, a little more daring, and a little farther away from the Spider-Man we all love. When Parker does find a way back, it will be at an epic moment of heroism when SSM has really lost it, gone too far, and Parker will really be needed to save the day and the people from SSM, thus cementing himself back into his body and keeping the people of New York NOT on his side, as the ever hated/loved hero.

@johnkmccubbin91 I agree this 3 part series seemed to miss something, but I think I understand what direction they were going for. I have collected all the issues of SSM and have enjoyed them all. I wish I could have rated this a 3.5/5 but there are no half stars.

@theacidskull: hahahahahaha, tell me how you really feal hahaha. I love it. I can understand, SSM is obnoxious and pompous, but I am in it for the long haul when Peter makes his triumphant return.

But thanks for looking at my review. I appreciate it.

@theacidskull: I am treating this as more of an experience. I am Italian, and to make a good sauce it may take 8 - 10 hours to make, a lot of simmering. I hate seeing Otto in Peters body, but I feel like the sauce just isn't ready yet. Once Peter comes back, the pain and agony of "waiting" will be so much sweeter when Peter is ready and able to come back. I believe that. The art is also, IMO, very good. But, I will continue to review this book and you can follow along without having to support it, until Peter is back.

Great review, dude! I utterly hate how people say this title is crap without giving any reason, besides the fact that Spidey is not Peter anymore. And even if you do hate it, you don't need to go on every positive review and start saying how Slott is an a-hole and that you disagree with the review entirely. Get over it! Seriously, you're starting to sound like an annoying 8 year old.

Personally, I'm enjoying the change. We know it's not a permanent thing, so enjoy it while it lasts. Dude, if you wanna read some comics with Peter, buy some older trades. There are over 700 issues of ASM with Parker. No need to get mad over 13 that he isn't in.

Again, great review man and, by the way, I'm not referring to you at ALL if it sounded that way.

@tomlikesfries: thanks Tom! I appreciate the positive feedback. I personally have really enjoyed this series thus far because I do know it is temporary. It is interesting to see how Doc Oc is using Peters body more effectively, but becoming a massive jerk and megalomaniac in the process. I have rated this comic high for that and for the good art I feel. Spider-Man is such a popular character so I can see how people have a hard time accepting the current predicament of SSM.

So SpOck kills another villain, doesn't get any repercussions for his reckless behavior, blackmails the mayor in order to get fund for a private army.

This is basically Spider-man for philistines.

I am Glad You Enjoy it. But let me tell you that i do NOT complain out of thing air, i know this series is terrible which is exactly why i don't like it, and don't dare assume that i go to every thread saying it sucks and complain for the sake of complaining.

First of, Spider-mans Friends are complete idiots, mary Jane, someone who has noticed and caught Chameleon posing as peter before simple is UNABLE to tell that Spider-man , a friendly cheerful person has shifted to an arrogant ass. why? Because Slott doesn't like it thats why.

i don't like thet fact that Spider-mans Rogues are dying out as well. Spider-man has many interesting villains that could be used for great stories but they are serving as spider-mans personal punching bags. Rhino died before Superior even Begun, and now we are going down the list of villains, only to make the POINT over and over again of peter Being inferior to ock/

After Issue 9, which was a slap in the face to every spider-man fan out there, i don't understand how anyone could say this is good. i'd understand if they keep reading though, i would do the same for hulk since he is my favorite.

Also the Premise is flawed from the beginning, I don't understand how a Murderous monster could become a more sufficient hero than peter Parker.

Slott is not a Good writer, he doesn't take Constructive criticism from People who even like the book, so yeah, i hate Superior.

Sure fans are just angry that peter is gone, not because the book sucks.

I never realized this series was such sore subject for some of the fans. As a serious Spider-Man fan, I can totally understand how one may feel the mythos of the character is being destroyed. But this is how I look at it. It is still Peter Parker's body. It is just on loan; like if you loaned your next-door neighbor your car. Sure, you will worry how he treats it, because it is not his car and you are the only one that takes real good care of it. Maybe your friend will drive too fast or slam on the brakes. At the end of the day, you and him both know that the car is still yours and you will get it back in due time, in good condition. And then it will be all yours again to do with what you will. But in the meantime, allow your neighbor to be at peace driving your car. You'll get it back soon enough. All's well that ends well.

With orders to outright kill the Spider Slayer, we dive into a story brimming with potential. Does it live up to said hype? ... Not exactly, but it does do a moderately good job as a whole. For a story with a lot going on, it still doesn't feel like too much happens by the end of it. There's some unnecessary reminiscing of Doc Ock's past (something that happens a little too often), some fights that don't really happen, and an overall lack of meat at the end. And the last encounter with Spider Sla...
