Here's an idea. Stop making her Superman Cousin. By attaching her to his family and not her own separate entity like say, Val Zod. It really bogs her down. Back in the Silver Age. Yeah I can see it happening why? Because it was all about the family type theme. Now a days? Being Superman relative automatically get rid of the following plot points.
1. Conflicting ideals. She could be have a completely different set of values from kal El because she been raised differently. Because she is his cousin , he get the auto family card and she listen to what he says.
2. Her own brand of justice. Because she wear the S-shield, we automatically think she has the same value as superman. That should not be the case. If anything she might make mistake and not give a damn. We see how Faora works in the movie, maybe a link between that and what Superman represent. "Frack with me and I'll destroy you." type of deal.
3. Buddy buddy relationship with the Kents. She could have given us the real "stranger in a strange world." type of feel. Instead of getting instantly set up by Superman to be a Kent foster alien.
4.The Villians from Super girl wasn't bad but maybe Brainiac because she REALLy have a grudge against the damn machine. I am going by Superman Unbound this time, Kal El was not young enough to remember the attack from Branic but Kara was, that could be potential plot.
5. Her color scene need to change , maybe like that Dark Supergirl outfit we saw when she was serving Darkseid Pre- New 52.
6. The awkwardness of not actually being family but knowing that they are pretty much the last male and female of their species left on the planet. Being family takes that path off the table. Being strangers does not, since now as a Kyptonian it would be logical from Kara point of view to replenish the Kryptonian races. IT would really bring to bare the differences in values once again between Earth/Krypton.
7. She should have her own base on operation. Maybe on the moon. She should also be more familiar with krypotian tech. SImilar to how Kyle Rayner did not know that his ring could talk or translate. Kara could visit Kal base and pull up stuff that Clark never new existed.
8. should also have her be familiar with all the aliens races that have attacked earth and in a surprising move. Tell the Justiice League or whoever how to beat or exploit their weakness. After all the Kryptonian have encountered them all before. SHe might even find it odd that one of Starfire species is so far away or why there are four green lantern assigned to Earth.
