    Nice and fresh new book

Ok, so my title makes it sound like the latest salad dressing, but seriously, this Supergirl is filling a void in the kids' comics shelf. Not to get all gender-specific but there is some truth to fact that people like to read/watch characters to which they can relate. Marvel Adventures has tons of kids comics but Power Pack and Franklin Richards are the only non-teen characters that I've seen in the superhero genre. DC launched Tiny Titans which is the best kids' comic of all time; DC also has Teen Titans Go!, Batman Strikes! and Justice League Unlimited - none of which target girls between the ages of 8-13 the same way as this new Supergirl series.

DC is undergoing a major overhaul of its titles which will be announced at NYCC in a couple of months. We've already heard through the media about the cancelations of Robin, Nightwing and Birds of Prey, not to mention the "hiatus" of Batman; their new launches such as Tiny Titans and Supergirl have been some of my favorite successes of 2008. As Grandpa Neville used to say, "Leap and a net will appear." DC has taken some risky leaps and so far it's paying off for them.

Supergirl begins with your basic origin story but it's reworked with quirky humor and adoloscent drama. How did she get to Earth? She strapped herself to a time rocket that her father was about to launch to deliver a message from Argo to Superman on Earth. Kara was mad her parents and wanted to "show them" but she assumed they would see her strapped to the rocket. Off she went. Her crash landing on Earth was perfectly timed to actually land on some villains and save the day. The media bombarded her but Superman found her and explained about her powers. He also created her secret identity Linda Lee. Having trouble understanding humans, Supergirl wants to get back to her home on Argo. Stay tuned to find out how she copes and how her relationship with Superman and the humans will develop.
