    Not What I Hoped For

    The Story:

Supergirl arrives in the 31st century where The Legion Of Super-Heroes are still dealing with the death of a member of their team. Lightning Lad signs a deal with the United Planets to make The Legion Of Super-Heroes an officially sanctioned peace-keeping force.

    My Thoughts:

After the events of the Infinite Crisis, DC Comics merged the Supergirl and Legion Of Super-Heores series together. Writer Mark Waid who I'm usually a fan of, scripts this story that failed to live up to my expectations. Without much explanation, Supergirl arrives in the 31st century and eventually teams up with The Legion Of Super-Heroes. Now I can accept that and let the lack of explanation pass, but the writing for Supergirl's character was just awful. She's written to believe that she is currently dreaming everything that's going on. It makes her character look weak and delusional which I don't understand the purpose of doing. I'm not sure at this point if Mark Waid is doing this for a good reason or not, but it basically contradicts everything that has happened with her character recently. In her own series she was the exact opposite of weak and delusional. She was powerful and slightly over-confident. So her characterization did not have me happy at all.

Another reason I may not have enjoyed the comic as much as I would have liked to was that I hadn't read anything of The Legion Of Super-Heroes before this. A member of their team recently died and the team is still reeling from tragic events. So this wasn't exactly the ideal jumping on point as it was slightly difficult to follow.

Barry Kitson's artwork is tolerable at best. Perhaps it's partially due to me recently seeing Michael Turner and Ian Churchill draw Supergirl in the issues that took place before this story. Bottom line is Kitson's Supergirl is extremely plain and dull. About the complete opposite of the way she was portrayed in the other comics. It's not just Supergirl either. At times a lot of the other characters look bland as well. The artwork isn't horrible, it's just barely tolerable.

I was hoping to enjoy this series since it involves Supergirl whom I like and The Legion Of Super-Heroes who I haven't had the opportunity to read much of, but have been wanting to for some time. All I can do is hope the following issues get better.

    Rating: 2.5/5
