Supergirl #14 Review
***SPOILER FREE REVIEW***
The review for Supergirl #14 on comic book resources makes the following adept statement that I completely agree with: Supergirl #14 suffers from a case of the crossovers.
Supergirl #14 continues the H'el on Earth crossover that started back in Superman #13 and continued in Superboy #14. Many of the storytelling points of this issue rely on you having read those issues. It makes reading the beginning and end of this comic read disjointed. This is very unfortunate, as I feel that Superman and Superboy are vastly inferior titles to Supergirl, and both those titles (and the overall weakness of this crossover) drags down the normally strong Supergirl with it. The main issue I have with the comic book is that the villain H'el completly lacks personality; I feel that if this was a movie, people would criticize the actor playing H'el's performance for being wooden and bland.
Issue #14 isn't some of Mahmud Asrar's best work. His work here looks significantly scratchier than usual, which becomes a detriment to the comic. Also, alot of the faces he drew in this issue are really off. I can't even quite describe it, but the faces really threw me out of the comic. It's a shame, because Asrar's art has grown on me throughout this series, and Issue #14 isn't the best showcase of his work.
It's a shame that the H'el on Earth crossover is dragging down Supergirl. This is normally a fun title with some solid artwork. Quite frankly, I can't wait for this H'el on Earth crossover to end, so I can get back the Supergirl series I've been enjoying since the beginning of the New 52.
