Superboy #20 Review
Overview:
Superboy wants to turn himself in for stealing the money but is stopped by Dr. Psycho, Dreadnought, and Psiphon.
The Good:
It is utterly ridiculous how much better this one issue is than everything that Tom DeFalco did. Justin Jordan shows that right out of the gate that he has a great feel for Superboy’s character and can write him well. The story is nothing majorly special but the dialogue is what makes all the difference here. It just flows and seems so natural to the characters that it is really makes the issue seem so much better than all 19 previous issues combined. Seeing Superboy’s supporting cast expand to some possibly villainous people is also a nice touch.
The writing from Justin Jordan is excellent. It is the best Superboy in the New 52 and the series just before it too.
The issue is drawn by four different people: R.B. Silva, Rob Lean, Kenneth Rocafort, and Chriscross. Individually, they are not bad at all but the art doesn’t flow together that well. Having the colors done by Richard and Tonya Horie helps to tie the different styles together a bit though.
The Bad:
The art doesn’t flow together, particularly Rocafort’s. His art is great but it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the others.
Verdict:
The best issue of Superboy yet is delivered by Justin Jordan and a team of artists. The dialogue is fantastic and makes the story a lot better than what it would be otherwise. DeFalco was alright but Jordan is amazing, if this issue is any indication, there are bright times ahead for this series.
