Suicide Squad #1 - Kicked in the Teeth

3

Who is a part of the new Suicide Squad? Well, this issue should be able to answer your question.

A new team of the Suicide Squad comes together, but their first mission will be torturous.... because they are being tortured. Get it?

The Good

I've noticed some people pretty mad about the Harley Quinn design. I don't think they realize how awesome it is though. Finally, Harley Quinn can come into her own and get out of the shadow of the Joker. She's a strong enough character on her own. She doesn't need the Joker to be relevant. The redesign separates her from the clown Speaking of character redesigns, Deadshot also looks really good. He went though what looks to be an armor upgrade, and it looks pretty B.A.

I really like everyone on the team (minus one character), and what I enjoyed most about this issue was the ending of the story. I won't give anything away, but these guys have their hands full. Seriously, they'll be put through some tough stuff in the next couple of issues, and hopefully, their missions will be this insane each month.

The Bad

I didn't enjoy it. It's just not a book for me. Will I read the next couple of issue, yes, but only because I vowed to read the first three issues of every new 52 book. If anything is going to make me excited about this book, it's going to be the missions. Aside from Harley and Deadshot, I couldn't care less about King Shark (I've always hated him). The thing is, I don't know the rest of the team. I've never heard of them, but that's not really a bad thing.

Another book featuring multiple artists, which is my number one pet peeve. It's incredibly distracting, especially when the quality of art drops downward out of no where.

Lastly, it's not good for new readers. You're plopped right into the middle of madness and the book doesn't really do a great job of explaining who these characters are. It's not new reader friendly.

The Verdict

Overall, it was a decent book. I think more than anything I'm excited to continue reading this. I'm loving the character redesigns and Harley Quinn stepping away from Joker. On the downside, the multiple artists bugged me out and I really just didn't enjoy this issue overall. I also don't feel this is a solid book for new readers. I mildly MILDLY recommend this book only because I think it's the foundation for a good upcoming storyline and nothing else.
