Poll Storm is the most successful black female character (70 votes)

    Agree 56%
    Disagree 43%

This is not an opinion. This is not a debate. This is a fact. Storm is the most successful decorated black female character in all of comics. And possibly the most successful black female superhero beyond comics. And I can see why you Storm fans love her so much. I can see why...

The reason this crossed my mind, was because I was looking through black female superheros and there were hardly any good ones or quality ones besides her and Monica Rambeau. Now Monica Rambeau would have this title, but Monica obviously isn't as well known compared to Storm. Anyways there weren't really that much good black female superheros with good quality/decoration like with Storm.

What also made this cross my mind, as someone who likes to write and have spoken with some people who also like to write is that many people tell me(and I already know this) is that they have hard times writing a black female character, especially as a superhero. Black male superheros are already hard to write for some non-black writers, but with black female superheros its seems to be even harder. This is why black female superheros are so embedded with stereotypes and some sort of "sassy" personality. I trying to say being sassy is negative, but we see it all the time and it seems that what black female characters can only be known.

But with Storm...Its a completely different story. She is not embedded with tacky stereotypes, cliche background/origins or is given lame powers. With Storm... When I look at the Storm character I see a black Nubian queen. A black goddess that is almost similar to the ones African mythology. And I know you Storm fans see this too. Again her personality is not one of being, "sassy", but strong and mighty and when she want to like a warrior. Storm for some reason always reminds me of real African queens such as Queen Hatshepsut

    No Caption Provided

    Queen Nzinga

    No Caption Provided

And finally Queen Amanirenas of Kush

    No Caption Provided

All three were beautiful black noble and powerful females, but could be warriors when needed just like Storm. But more importantly the biggest feature I like about Storm is her powers. She is not given lame powers like some black female characters, but instead her powers which is weather control seems to go(and even connect) with her personality and overall Africaness. Its natural and organic and not "rushed". Heck everything about Storm being a black female character comes off so fresh and natural.

So yes it is a fact that Storm is the most successful black female superhero in comics. It seems the writers did not rush her by just wanting their token character for the X-Men, but instead they took their time and crafted the character that now she is the go to black female character everyone knows about in comics. Again not saying some of the stereotypes I listed are bad, but Storm did not need them for her character to grow. And again I fully understand why her fans love her so much.

As someone who is barely a fan of the character, that is my rant.

Indeed. And its mostly due to there not being enough quality black female superheros. Maybe Monica Rambeau in the future can give her competition if writer Ewing keeps writing/promoting her. But for now Storm is queen.

She is unquestionably. Spectrum, Voo Doo, Michonne, Shuri, Monet, etc all have varying degrees of popularity but nothing close to Storm's.

Also, Vixen! Her popularity may get a boost with her new show coming out.

So, you think Storm is a great character because she isn't defined by her race.....but all the reasons you listed about liking her pertain to her being black??

It has been suggested in the X-Men books that Storm is supposed to possess the finer features of every race and transcend beauty.

Uh... What? I said I like her because she does not need the cliche stereotypical sassy personality(which many female black characters are stuck to) to be a great character. Not because she is black... When did I say that?

Without question Storm is. After her it's hard to even call the name of other black super heroines. I'm more familiar with Vixen now due to Justice League Unlimited. If one asked the most successful black male hero. I'd have to say Spawn.

Agreed here as well. I was teetering on BP or John Stewart (maybe Blade in the 90's), but I think over all Spawn has been the most successful across the media mediums.

Hmmm... The fact is, Marvel is a whole lot bigger company so BP possibly is.... I think more people know more about Blade than Spawn because of the movies.

I really don't know who should have the title.

    @jhazzroucher:

Actually much more people know about Spawn than BP. Just because Marvel is a bigger company doesn't mean much. They have not promoted BP as heavily as BP. Spawn has had his own movie, had his own TV series and has appeared in video games. Yes BP has appeared in some animated shows but that's about it. Spawn is actually well known even outside of comics as a supernatural hero.

I guess my reasoning behind saying Spawn was that though Black Panther,Fslcon,Black Panther had been around longer Spawn imo at the time of his debut had the biggest impact at the time. He had and still has his own comic and is without question one of the most powerful comic characters, certainly the most black character. That HBO series was off the chain. At the time of Image debut I don't think Marvel or DC featured a black super hero headlining his own comic. Yet Image had Spawn and Shadowhawk. Youngblood featured Chapel. I feel in way Spawn's success ,the debut of Milestone comics and that group of diverse heroes paved the way for Marvel Knights Black Panther which imo is really when he became a BADASS. And DC started using Black Lightning more often. Steel getting his own series etc. Think about as popular as Storm is I'm not sure she's ever had an ongoing series but usually a mini series. However I may be mistaken on that.

I agree with you. Despite of just being in Image, he managed to become as nearly as popular as the X-men and he got his own cartoon series, a movie, etc.

Storm just had an ongoing solo by the way. It lasted just 11 issues though.

There's Something Righteous in the Weather

The great mathematician Ed Lorenz derived a multi-variable system to analyse emergent flows in atmospheric convection and weather.

Meteorology has become a fascinating field of science, and Storm is an African-American mutant superheroine with the uncanny ability to manipulate weather systems.

Not only is she symbolic for our modern age of climatology anxieties (i.e., global warming), but her ethnic identity puts her in firm stead to be a diplomat of weather systems paternalism. She may be the most influential female ethnic minority pop-culture avatar since Aunt Jemima.
