This bit of news was a bit of a surprise yet makes perfect sense. Dynamite Entertainment continues their big announcements for San Diego Comic-Con and have grabbed Steve Niles and Dennis Calero for ASH AND THE ARMY OF DARKNESS.

"What I'm doing with Ash and the Army of Darkness is a complete reboot," says Niles. "We start and the last frame of the film and then go right to the next. It's a wild ride and I think fans of the film will be very happy because I am bringing back a lot of what made the movie so fun. My run of Ash and the Army of Darkness takes place almost entirely in the 1300's setting. That was what made Army of Darkness stand apart. I'm hoping readers agree.

I'm very excited to be working with Dynamite and thrilled to be working on Ash and the Army of Darkness. The film is one of my favorites and I think we have a really fresh, exciting take for Ash's continuing adventures fighting the dead. Dynamite has been expanding their line and have an impressive array of comic creators working with them now. I'm looking forward to joining the team."

Niles is best known for his 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, co-created with Ben Templesmith. Ben will also do some covers for the series.

Joining Niles, Calero has already started sinking his teeth into the series. Check out these early preview pages.

I've read a lot of the Army of Darkness comics. They've never been that good honestly. Here's hoping Steve Niles can turn it around.

I'm so mixed about the Army of Darkness comics. I loved the films, and I've read the first two omnibuses of them, and to be honest..they weren't that good and had tons of plot holes. I haven't read the current series, but I might pick up this if it is indeed starting over fresh.

Also, as an unrelated note, I wish they would explain how the hell Ash's metal hand works. Is it magic? Cause how can he move it if it's not attacked to his nervous system?? That really bugs me!!

I'm glad they decided to reboot the AoD comics because they were kinda lackluster (except this one) and restarting from scratch was really the only way to go back to the roots... But STEVE NILES!!! surprise

IDK, I've heard his Criminal Macabre series were decent but I really disliked some of the books he worked on. Hope he won't screw this up but I'm far from optimistic. straight face

It's powered by the pure awesomeness of Ash...thought everyone knew that?

Regardless, I am looking forward to this. There is very little that has been able to capture the essence of Ash outside of the core movies and maybe a handful of stories here and there. I will definitely check this out.

I've liked Army of Darkness comics in the past, but just the fact that Steve Niles is gonna be doing some now with use of Templesmith and Calero makes me think that this series can be spectacular! Can't wait!

Steve Niles sucks as a writer. Plain and simple.
