Steve Niles started off as an editor in comics.  His love for horror stories got him into writing.  Writers like Alan Moore has been inspirations to what Niles could do in comics.  Alan Moore's creation of John Constantine would lead Niles to create Cal McDonald of Criminal Macabre.
 
Niles would struggle as a comic creator until his creator-owned 30 Days of Night series was picked up and translated into a movie franchise.  In the mainstream Niles would focus his work on the darker characters, such as Spawn and Batman.  Niles would also create a Frankenstein like monster for the Gotham universe named Simon Dark.
