    Just above average.

This comic is the first appearance and origin of the DC hero Steel.  Now known as Commander Steel.  The whole story takes place in 1939 and it seems disjointed somehow.  The Book was written in 1978 and I'm reading it in 2010 so maybe you can get an idea of what I mean.  Things just don't seem to fit.  Steel's super-abilities seem odd as well.  He has all these powers that helped him but he doesn't use this knowledge to help others.  he just keeps it a secret.  The science they are claim could save countless lives and improve their station of life after being hurt in the war.  At least with Captain America they couldn't quite duplicate the experiment but here there is nothing like that.

I also don't like the girlfriend Gloria Giles who is completely unsupportive.  She even breaks up with him at least one time in the book and for sure leaves him agree the second time if not breaking up with him.  She has not charm at all and is even obnoxious at his bedside while he is lying near death.  She is every bit only concerned with herself and lacks any good qualities.  I also don't like how she is drawn when we see her for the first time.  She has a pink dress and orange hair but the colors are so similar that they blend and it looks like she has pink hair in 1939.

The book is a pretty strait forward origin story without a confrontation with an arch nemesis.  There is a hint about Baron Death but there is no match-up.  The art was great and it is cool to read about someone beside Superman and Batman but the story really lacked heart and could have been done differently.  I'm sure if DC decided to do a story like this know or redo this story it would be a lot better today.  Overall the book was only just above average and so i gave it 3 stars.  Happy reading.
