False impressions indeed
Art - The Lines are average with some a little better than and other a little worse than. The Colors work with the lines and are about average, but a little better than. The real star artistically for this book is actually the dynamic panel lay out which is dynamic and uses it to convey some of the motion of the action and such, but doesn't go overboard.
Story - There were several points in this issue where I'm just like, "what?" First and most important is that the beginning starts off with a fight between Static and Guillotine that throws me because I don't feel like the previous arc really was wrapped up and the change in focus between the Slaters to this other villain which is really what is the problem with this. The Slater gang wasn't finished up properly and that finished up story thing should have been this issue rather than going straight into this and this should be next months issue.
The second point is that because of the blacking out of characters when pale man shows up I was confused as to where he came from and had to look closely over the last 5 or so pages... also Pale Man is off to me in general because this issue he is revealed to be both undercover and under Pirahna's authority which wasn't right to me because he always came off as equal to or above him.
The third point is on pages 16 through 18 where Static is thinking on page 16, on page 17 he says something, and then page 18 he says the follow up of what he was thinking on page 16. It confused me because why would you continue like that, but this betrays a bigger problem which is that they are trying to make Static witty and funny...which he is... but this writer sucks at it which just makes me groan with every bad witty remark.
Characterization - With Pale Man, Priahna, Virgil, his sister, Guillotina, that doctor guy, Virgil's parents all being in this comic and most having some definable trait they are all pretty one dimensional and a lot of that isn't done well in itself... so if you're looking for a comic to get attached to, or something like say Ultimate Spiderman-y, this isn't the book you're looking for.
Recommendation - Maybe read it first, before buying. It's not so horrible that you can't find something to like about it, but it's definitely on the lower end of the average range of the new 52... What is disappointing is that it could be so much better. I think someone knows that at DC and they are just trying way to hard to be like Spiderman, than to be like Static.
