Starman
is a comic volume from DC Comics that started in 1988
This was DC Comics' third attempt at making Starman a cosmic character. The first attempt, Mikaal Tomas (Michael Thomas) was dead on arrival in the mid-1970's, allegedly lasting only one issue. The second attempt, part of a mass expansion in 1980, Prince Gavin, was an eight-page back-up feature with Aquaman and Plastic Man in Adventure Comics. Unfortunately, the good Prince quickly was evicted along with Curry and O'Brien by the Legion of Super-Heroes. Kids. Now, eight years later, DC would try again with Roger Stern, Tom Lyle and Bob Smith. Unfortunately, while the book lasted longer than the other two, it was no better off. With five Green Lanterns, a fractured Hawkman, Adam Strange, The Manhunters, The Darkstars, The New Gods, Darkseid - not to mention Superman and the Martian Manhunter - the cosmos can be a pretty cluttered place. The signature Starman gimmick was the cosmic power rod. And the finhead. Prince Gavyn had a wodden staff, but no finhead. Mikaal and Will Payton had neither. Star Boy works in the Legion because of the futuristic setting; and, nearly all of the other members have cosmic powers as well. Will Payton struggled to fight the good fight for 45 issues. A mere two years would pass before James Robinson introduced Jack Knight, and would tie all of the Starmen together - including Sylvester Pemberton. This, is Will Payton's time.
