Is Star Wars Going to be Re-Re-Released?
In 1977, 1980, and 1983, the original Star Wars films were released on the big screen and took the world by storm by becoming the most popular science fiction films of all time. Then in 1997, 20 years after the release of the first film, the Star Wars Trilogy was re-released with updated sound and special effects. Looking at home, the series was released at least 4 separate times on VHS and DVD, and each time, something minor was improved.
Bleeding Cool recently learned that they could be doing another release of the trilogy. In an interview with ForceCast, sound engineers Matt Wood and Dave Acord mentioned that they have changed one of the sound effects in the original film and "at some point audiences will be hearing that scene again with the new sound effect." By the look of the sentence, it seems we'll be getting yet another release of the film in theaters, at least with the sound changed up.
Another rumor running around town, which has been for a few years now, is that the original trilogy will get the 3D treatment. Lucasfilms has yet to say whether or not we'll be seeing a 3D Star Wars update, but if this trend continues to be popular for another 5 years, then I'm guessing Star Wars 3D will happen. But does it need to happen? Why does everything have to be in 3D? How about instead of doing all these updates to the film, they re-release the ORIGINAL trilogy as it was back in 1977? No updated special effects, Luke screaming as he falls after getting his hand cut off, no Greedo shooting first, and no Hayden Christianson in the clouds at the end of Jedi. That's what I'd like to see considering that I didn't get to see the first two films in the theater, only the Return of the Jedi. What do you guys think? Do we need another re-release?
i saw the original 3 films rerealese when they come out last at the cinema so iam done now seen all at cinema and iam happy without paying again to see the same films even in 3d. I still wanst the non lame edited updates in HD.
" @ComicMan24 said:I would eventually like to see the final three films (7,8,9) but I do NOT want Lucas writing the scripts." I agree with you inferiorego. If they want to release them again, then they shuld release the original trilogy without any tampering. "No! I want them to make movies on the Old Republic and the times after Return of the Jedi. LOL "
" @ComicMan24 said:I don't have any problem if they want to do new films. But why alter the original trilogy more?" I agree with you inferiorego. It's really no big deal. Honestly, the differences are so small that I could care less and I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I never even noticed that Han didn't shoot first when I saw the re-releases. I just wish that Lucas would stop flogging the horse. There's no horse left. Time to move on and work on other stuff and leave the Star Wars universe in the hands of someone who can write an actual story.
As long as Lucas doesn't go with the 3D craze (which he probably will), it's all good to me. I would like to see the original ones tho.
Yeah! Do that!
As long as these new versions have Han shooting first and don't change up the SFX too much, I'm all okay with it. I like the classic SFX. They fit with the movie more, I think, so when I saw crazy CGI Jabba in the hanger talking to Han I was like "whoa, this is weird". And, well, I don't need to expand upon Han shooting first.
I remember seeing the "Special Edition" in theaters back in 1997. I had already had the series in its remastered THX VHS form for some years then, and as a kid, it was just a real kick to finally see the movies on the big screen (let alone with enhanced effects).
I think if they released the original series in its original form back in theaters, that would be really neat.

But come on...sure no one WANTS tampering, but everyone knows Lucas will toy with, take out and add, alter and CGI, and shamelessly exploit the crap out of everything again. Before you know it, Padme's in the Original Trilogy, Yoda has a lightsaber on Dagobah, Jar Jar's in Jabba's Palace, Taun Taun's are CGI, and SW is more ruined than before, which is something that doesn't feel possible...and yet Lucas always manages to succeed in doing.
There's just no way we'll get a new re-release without any changes. No way! He's yet to re-release SW post-prequels without some sort of change...Lucas is too classless these days to let a classic age.

Best idea in the world! So of course Lucas won't do it........
...or how about instead of tampering with the originals again, we stop toying with them and make entirely new good "should have been" prequels that actually sync with the original trilogy?
" I could go for some original release Star Wars in theatres. Or even just on Blu-Ray... "
" I could go for some original release Star Wars in theatres. Or even just on Blu-Ray... "Amen, Paragon. I've been waiting on an Episodes 1-6 Blu-Ray box set for a while now.
I dunno, I mean it's Lucas's story, he can do what he wants with it. And I suspect he will as long as it keeps making money.
Also, It was a little weird to see Hayden Christiansen at the end of Return of the Jedi. I remember thinking, "Wow! The guy they got to play Anakin in the original trilogy looks a lot like Hayden Christiansen! Wait a minute..."

Yes it is...does that mean that if he made Jar Jar Boba Fett we're have to like it? ...it may be "his" story, but in more than a few respects truly it's our story. We should always have a say! We're the audience. Why wouldn't or shouldn't our opinion matter? So we responded according. Many, arguably even a majority, dislike the prequels because we felt they were superficial commercials without heart, which he's clearly bitter about the backlash. But if he placed fan opinion higher and didn't just care about us for what's in our wallet, we'd have been given over-all more critically successful films and he would be as beloved as he once was. Alas, was not to be.

I will pick the Trilogy up again when it makes its way to Blu-ray and so far I haven't re-bought any of my DVDs on Blu-ray yet. Though I do own both Blu-ray version of Casino Royale now that I think about it. The DVD set of the trilogy came with such an awesome documentary and other extras that I would be excited to see what they can create for the Blu-ray set.
I personally don't mind the Special Edition versions of the Original Trilogy, it is kind of a cool to re-watch them and spot the differences. They change little things in each re-release, like I believe they modified the whole Greedo scene on the DVD version so they both shoot at the same time. But I do think the Blu-ray set should use some of that space to store a high-quality transfer of the original versions.
As for a 3D version, its just a wait and see thing for me. If its a bad 3D conversion like The Last Airbender then it will suck but if they really put some effort into it like they are prone to do with this Trilogy then it could be cool at least for its novelty value.
He really does. The visionary is spent clinging to old concepts and recycled ideas. He's dead! He's taking the Mona Lisa, adding a CGI mustache, shoving it in our face, running it through the mass marketing machine without a shred of shame, and expecting people to pay for it again. The sad part? Some SW fans are just as pathetic as he...because they indeed do pay it over and over again like brainwashed zombies Lucas uses as tools." Lucas just needs to let it go...how long does he expect to ride the waves of a 30 year old movie "
Make something new! Or if you truly must keep it in the SW universe, stop making it as the expense of the awesomeness of the Originals. It seems almost like everything new in the SW universe utterly deteriorates something about those original classics...delivers some new revelation (or contradiction) about the OT that completely destroys how you viewed them. If he stops making stories tired to them...I'd be happy.
I think that instead of whipping the dead horse tied to the re-invented wheel, Lucas should move forward within the Star Wars universe and tell new stories with the new technology...as long as someone else does the telling.
As long as they make Han Solo shoot first at the bar scene with Greedo, then I'm A-OK with the re-re-release.
"I would eventually like to see the final three films (7,8,9) but I do NOT want Lucas writing the scripts. "Totally agree, although I don't mind if they re-re-release the originals in the theater. I was to young to remember and appreciate the greatness that was Star Wars in theaters (I was 2 forgive me). I think a re-release in theaters would give alot of the younger fans something they haven't been able to appreciate except on the small screen. Lets be honest there is something about seeing a movie in the theater, its why the medium will never die. Lucas knows this, so as long as he doesn't make anymore crazy changes (I can forgive Greedo shooting first, I do not however forgive putting that hack Christianson at the end of Jedi.)
" @Terrific_T said:I get what your saying. I didn't mean that he should do whatever he wants with it, I just meant that if he wants to then he will because he's the creator and he has the power. I think Lucas should learn from the mistakes that he made and do more films. I'm dying to see the Jedi wars and Luke rebuild the Jedi temple.
They updated Return of the Jedi to have Hayden Christiansen in the clouds with Yoda and Obi-Wan at the end instead of the original actor under the Vader helmet that they showed when they took it off?
