    Leia vs. Vader!

Reading the early 80's series of STAR WARS comics from Marvel takes me back to those days when we didn't know all the details that Lucas would eventually unfold in his prequels. In fact, this particular issue was released only a year after THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK therefore there is no Han Solo as he was last seen being encased in carbonite and taken to Jabba the Hutt by Boba Fett.

The story takes place on a planet called Aargau, which is a banking planet of the highest security. Leia and a character called Viscount Tardi are meeting with bankers to finance a new squadron of X-Wing Fighters for the Rebellion. As currency, Leia is handing over jewels. Not just any precious jewels either--- the crown jewels of Alderaan, her home world that was destroyed by the Death Star.

Vader shows up and claims he's on banking business for the Emperor and pulls out the stops to try and frame Leia and Tardi for breaking strict laws on Aargau, but Leia shows him up each and every time. It plays more as a sitcom than a space opera. In the end, it turns out that Vader was after the jewels. For what? Who knows and who cares.
