Character development is a good choice

This book is a lot of fun.  It originally took place during the Deep Space Nine Series and told the stories of Nog while he was at Starfleet Acadamy.  This was great for me as Nog was one of my favorite characters from the series.  I especially loved the stories that involved him going to Starfleet making the Ferengi a lot less like a race of cartoons or comic relief characters.

I really liked the characters in this book and they are really flushed out.  The token human, a warrior woman Andorin, A Vulcan/Romulan spy, (still a mystery), Nog and a half Jewish/Muslim young woman who is idealistic about the Federation being welcoming to all groups of people.  Nog was a smidgen off as he is portrade as a little too Ferengi.  In other words I felt he had grown away from some of these things at this point.  That said I might be splitting hairs.

I also enjoyed the introduction of a few minor characters fro this group.  I especially like Admiral Andrea Brand.  She did not do much in this book but she is a minor character from the series and I love to see those characters grow more.  The best part was she was drawn so much like the actress who played the role that I recognized her instantly.

I loved the story and only had a small (really small) problem with the ending being a little forced.  There is always a ton to tackle in a first issue and the writers went with character development and that was the right decision.  So when it came time for the crew to go on a mission together there was not enough time to tackle a solid story.  So it went a bit quick and was very cliche.

I gave this book four stars because it was good and highly enjoyable.  I would recommend this to anyone. I really am looking forward to the next issue.
