    The Benefit of Doubt

     Ancient Vulcan T'Kell
I gave this book the benefit of doubt and gave it five stars.  Every book has been perfect so far.  This issue however is unique in the series as it is the first story of the series that takes place after the pilot episode.  It is also the first issue that is a two-parter.  Knowing how awesome the past books were and seeing no error here is where I base my rating.

Now that, that is out of the way let me voice my concerns.  The Enterprise finds a group of Vulcan who live on an unkonwn world and who still have their emotions.  This raises a red flag as to how they are going to deal with these characters as their is no reference to them anywhere in any of the later series and something this big would have to have been referenced somewhere.  Now this could very well be explained in the next issue but the writers will have to handle it well.

My second concern is the death toll.  This does not bother me that anyone died in the issue to tell the story but everything about Captain Pike leads us to believe that he will not take it well.  We just spent the last issue about how inwardly Pike takes this kind of loss and being so close on the heals of his friend could push him too far over.  He was going to quit the Federation for this very issue so it will have to be addressed when the phaser fire is over.  The writers have not let me down so far so I have faith they will not start now.

I enjoyed the story here.  I really like the characters especially Mia Colt.  I would recommend this to anyone especially Star Trek fans.
