Star Sapphire

Star Sapphire is a comic book character that first appeared in Green Lantern #16

Star Sapphire is the name of several female supervillains in DC Comics. They are one of seven collectives that have powers similar to the other Lantern Corps.

History

The Star Sapphire's powers are vast. They seem to be equipped with an arsenal of weapons, but their origins are largely unknown. They also seem to have a variety of personal powers, through whether they stem from themselves or their personal armament is also unknown.

As with their powers, the limitations of the Star Sapphire are unclear. Psychologically, they have displayed a bizarre preoccupation with gender, suspected of reflecting a pathological fear of men. They also have a less than accurate grasp of the variations in physics between dimensions. They have been foiled in both of their recorded cases primarily by their own over-confidence.

It has recently been revealed that the Star Sapphire's power gems were created by the Zamarons, an all female offshoot of the Oan race known as the Guardians of the Universe. The Zamarons left Oa eons ago, after disagreeing with the Guardians about how best to bring order to the Universe. The Guardians had shut themselves off from emotion, embracing only the green energy of willpower. The Zamarons thought this was a mistake, and sought to gather that which the Guardians had discarded.

To that end, they traveled the Universe, and found a world covered in violet crystal, the source of which was two beings, male and female, locked in an eternal embrace. An energy was radiating from the pair, and the Zamarons dubbed it the "Violet Light of Love" as emboddied by the Predator, and began sending out crystals that channeled this energy, in search of female hosts.

Unfortunately, the power of this Violet Light overwhelms it's bearer, causing them to develop an obsessive relationship, most often to male Lanterns. After mating with a Lantern, a female possessed by a Star Sapphire will often kill her mate, then encase their world in a violet crystal, to preserve their love.

The Zamarons have begun to see the flaw in this, however, and are taking steps to correct it, replacing the gems with Power Rings, and creating power batteries. This makes the Star Sapphires the third Corps, of which there are seven, each representing it's own corresponding emotion and color as reflected in the Emotional Spectrum.
