He works at the Krusty Krab. Dude must make like, 10k a year.
Squidward Tentacles
Character » Squidward Tentacles appears in 88 issues.
Squidward is the co-worker and next-door neighbor of SpongeBob SquarePants. He is an octopus, despite his name, and is eternally grumpy.
How the hell **** does Squidward afford that big tiki house?
It. Is. A. Freaken. Cartoon.
stop trying to find logic in Spongebob Squarepants, none of that stuff makes sense

I'm unable to fill in the blank in the title.
LMAO!
What do the characters in the Spongebob universe use as currency though? It's cash, but what kind of cash? Sea dollars or something, probably. And maybe Krusty Krab is about as good as it gets, career-wise in Bikini Bottom. Either that, or you're a bus driver or Plankton's minion.
It was only a matter of time before they started asking these type of questions. We must return to the depths, to plot.
Property values must be low in Bikini bottom. Guess Squidward was right to become a homeowner at this time.
How do they have fire in Bikini Bottom? If you ask me that's a far better question than how the characters afford things despite being paid sweat shop wages

One of the greatest animated shows ever made, don't question it. Although your logic is clearly flawed here in that you think this house is valuable but nothing in the show suggests as much. Rock isn't exactly hard to come by under the ocean, I would assume all the metal buildings in the town would be much more expensive. Also, Squidward's got seniority so he probably makes a decent wage at the KK unlike SpongeBob, also Squidward wouldn't put up for so little. He probably cancels out all the pay that SpongeBob doesn't get.
Alright, the biggest Easter Island statue weighs 75 tons. The head is only 3/5 of the weight, so its about 45 tons.
The majority of the heads were made from "Tuff" which is packed volcanic ash. I looked for the cost of Tuff, however according to Wikipedia, Tuff isn't an important economic item. I used concrete prices, which I'd assume would be more or less equal.
The current price of concrete is $75.43 a cubic yard, rounded to $75. (http://www.concreteforever.com/Concrete_Prices_Update.html) which is about a ton and a half
If you the math, it only costs about $2250. A very manageable figure.
But then again, we have to assume that concrete is much less expensive than tuff. Labor costs to pack the tuff into large heads would also inflate the price.
EDIT: But now that I think about it, real estate prices and labor costs would be independent.
I assume he bought the house, didn't have it built.
However the cost of materials for a house is ~about 25% of the total cost.
http://www.byoh.com/costestimating.htm
So I'd say, it'd be 2250 x 4, still only a little OVER $9000.
That includes the hallowing, the stabilizing, the decorating. Still a cheap figure.
So in conclusion, you are correct. The house is cheap.
Going into a bit more detail, a down payment should be between 3 - 20%. Say he does the maximum, $1800. I'm sure on a wage of $10,000, he will be able to get a $7,200 loan. Taking 20 years to pay back, it plays out at about $50 a month. (with a little interest)
We could also assume (judging by the opposite day episode) that due to Patrick and Spongebob being neighbors, the house would be even cheaper to compensate.
I am convinced, Squidward can afford the house.

I read this as sex dollars...something's wrong with me.
You're clearly attracted to Squidward.

Now that you mention it, I can see those tenticles doing wonders. Perhaps he does some male prostitution on the side for some extra cash?
