He was close friends with the team's first Nighthawk (Kyle Richmond) until he left the team due to being philosophically opposed to the Utopia Program and it's methods. After Nighthawk left, the team fractured and eventually fought a terrible battle that left many heroes on both sides dead or injured. Nighthawk was killed in the battle shortly after Hyperion and he had come to an understanding. The Squadron Supreme has clashed with Earth-616's premiere superhero team many times over the years with Hyperion typically fighting his closest physical equal; Thor, the God of Thunder. When Nighthawk and his forces finally confronted the Squadron, it was Lamphrey who was chosen to engage Hyperion with the idea being he could absorb Hyperion's awesome power and thus eliminate the most powerful and dangerous opponent from the field of battle. The plan didn't work out because the sum of Hyperion's power was too great for Lamphrey. Absobing and trying to contain the power caused Lamphrey to explode. killing him.

When the majority of the Squadron voted to take over the United States government and implement the Utopia Program in an effort to make life on Earth a veritable paradise, Nighthawk dissented and resigned because, philisophically he just couldn't accept the idea of the government/the Squadron usurping the free will of the people no matter how noble and honorable the intention. Nighthawk subsequently recruited and organized a superteam of his own to counter and confront the Squadron in an attempt to first stop them from doing more damage and second to undue any and all damage they had done. When Nighthawk's rebel team did indeed confront the Squadron, both sides incurred severe casualities and even fatalities.
