Television back story
Origins
Various flashbacks in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel reveal Spike's back-story. Spike's real name was William, often referred to as William "the Bloody" by people, due to his "bloody awful poetry". Mocked by his peers and the girl of his dreams, William runs into Drusilla, who seems to be the only one who truly understands him.
Sired by Drusilla, Spike is actually the youngest of the vampire gang formed by Angelus, Darla, Drusilla and himself. Being the youngest would mean he is the least powerful of the four, but what he lacked in power he seemed to make up in viciousness. Because of his feats and his headstrong nature, he and Angelus often conflicted with one another during this time period. He even took the life of two Slayers, a prowess that many ancient vampires and demons still respect. The name “Spike” is actually a nickname inspired in one of the forms of torture preferred by the vampire. He would use railroad spikes to prick his victims with, bleeding for hours before killing them.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Spike was first introduced in the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Spike came to Sunnydale with a weakened Druisilla, hoping that the dark energy from the Hellmouth would heal her. Spike also wanted to try and kill the slayer Buffy (having killed two slayers in the past). Things changed though when Angel lost his soul and became Angelus once again. Angelus began to take over, and Spike found himself more and more being pushed aside. When Angelus decided to destroy the world, Spike found himself in a postion to have to ally with Buffy and the Scooby Gang in order to stop Angelus from destroying the world and also to get Drusilla back at his side. Nontheless, once Spike had knocked out Drusilla he escaped with her rather than help Buffy against her fight with Angelus.
Spike made only one single appearance in the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Spike comes to Sunnydale drunken after Drusilla left him in South America for another demon. He kidnaps Buffy's friends Willow and Xander in order to have Willow perform a spell to make Drusilla come back to him. He changes his mind though, deciding to simply go back and torture her until she likes him again.
In season 4 of Buffy, Spike found himself unable to harm any life. This was caused by a chip which was implanted into his brain by 'The Initiative', a government run organization that experimented on demons. This rendered Spike helpless against the attacks of humans but allowed him to kill demons and other unholy creatures. Since he was a fanatic of destruction, he helped the Scooby Gang to get his kicks out of killing demons, altough sometimes he asked for payment. He also had no problem betraying them to help their enemies.
In season 5 of Buffy, Spike realized he was in love with the Slayer. He stuck around even when the Scooby Gang was sick of him and he helped them on a number of occasions. Most of the times he did it for his own convenience, but soon he discovered that he actually liked being with the good guys. Spike is grief stricken when Buffy was killed at the end of seson five.
When Buffy's friends ressurected her in the sixth season, the two started a turbulent relationship that was purely physical more than anything else. When Buffy finally decided to put a stop to their encounters, Spike cornered her and attempted to assult her. Ashamed of himself, Spike went in search of a way to restore his soul, so he could be the man Buffy deserves. To get the soul, he had to suffer through tortures in the hands of powerful demons and when he finally got it; the burden of his crimes sent him into a mentally unstable status.
He returned to Sunnydale in season seven almost completely out of his mind. Eventually he was able to come back to the grips of sanity. When the chip in his head begins to malfunction, the army gives Buffy the option of having the chip removed or to have the chip fixed. Buffy trusts Spike enough to get the chip in his brain removed. Buffy sought Spike's help one more time and he was a key element in the battle between the Slayers and The First Evil. Spike sacrifices himself to spare Buffy and friends from death and close the Hellmouth.
Angel Season Five
After the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike reappeared in the fifth season of the Buffy spin-off Angel. Unfortunately for Spike, his return from death was not a complete one, as he was stuck at Angel's Wolfram and Heart office in ghost form only. Eventually he regained physical form but he never went back to Buffy, deciding to stay in LA with Angel's team. He helps Angel take down the evil Circle of Black Thorn and the senior partners of Wolfram and Heart. Spike was one of the few members of the team to make it back after the big fight.

First Night, a series-within-a-series, took place in issues 6-8 of Angel: After the Fall. Spike's First Night story was contained in issue #6. After LA is sent to Hell by Wolfram and Heart, Spike decides he is going to just stick to himself until he finds Fred lying on the ground. While unsure of why she is no longer Illyria, he changes his mind and decides he is comfortable with having Fred at his side too. When they are attacked by a group of demons though, Fred turns back into Illyria, and Spike realizes just how much Illyria & Fred are going to need his help.
Spike: After the Fall
The four issue mini-series Spike: After the Fall picks up right after the end of Spike's First Night story. Spike and Illyria watching over a group of citizens. Illyria keeps turning back into Fred, and Spike is forced to keep turning her back into Illyria to protect her. Spike questions whether he may have feelings for Fred, and the group of women that Spike is with during Angel: After the Fall make their first chronological appearance. The issue opens with Spike meeting the dragon: while Spike considers ways of killing it, the dragon communicates that Spike should mount it. Once together, the dragon takes Spike to Wolfram & Hart, where a figure whom Spike does not recognize is suspended inside an energy field, writhing in pain.
Meanwhile, the civilians are at the mercy of the group of women. Spike encounters one, commandeers her truck, and finds the hostages, then tries to run down their leader of the group of female demons. She throws Fred in front of the truck, and Fred reverts to Illyria on impact. Illyria and Spike begin to melee the demon women, but their leader uses life-draining magic to turn the hostages into zombies and knock out Spike and Illyria. Spike awakens chained in a dark room filled with his zombified wards, and the demon leader tells him she is keeping him alive for his connections. Non, the head of the female demons attempts to bargain with a Gunn to return Spike to him.
Her power is revealed to be control of humans. Gunn beats her down and lets her go leading her to decide to kill Spike and all the humans with him. Non attempts to behead Illyria, but the ax shatters on contact. Illyria breaks free and starts killing all the female demons. Non prepares to kill the last human hostage before Connor appears and stops her. Connor, Spike, and Illyria continue their battle with Non. In the midst of the battle, Non attempts to feed on Connor, whom she realizes is not human, and on whom she cannot feed. After discovering that Non's Sadecki demon controls her flock of females, Spike tells Illyria to finish it off. During her confrontation with the demon, she again starts reverting between Fred and Illyria, but finally is able to gather herself and kill the demon.
Realizing his plan worked, Spike goes mano y mano with Non. After taking a beating from Spike, Non uses the last human hostage that the gang saved to gain some energy back. Illyria realizes this and kills the human, allowing Spike to finish off Non. Spike then becomes Lord of Beverly Hills, and tells the other lords to keep out. Later, Spike and Connor meet up and begin their crusade of saving the remaining humans in Los Angeles.
