Constantly, I have been seeing Spider-Woman being pushed, yet I don't really get what is making her the most prominent female of Marvel.
Outside of being the Skrull Queen, she just doesn't seem to do that much, yet now she's on the main Avengers team.   I can't even pinpoint what her personality is.
Am I the only one who doesn't get her huge boost in popularity?  Is it because she was in New Avengers that everyone loves her?  What has she done that makes her such a big shot?
Out of all the females in the Marvel U, why is it her that gets puts on the same level as the big 3?

I think it all started in New Avengers 1 when the team completely changed into more of a street level team she was the only female on the team and alot of people weren't  to familiar with her  so she kinda stood out and she was a double agent which was pretty interesting in itself plus she's a spy  thats pretty cool and a martial artist  i mean she is my favorite female in the marvel universe now but to me her hype kinda went down after bendis screwed her during the skrull invasion  and i think fans lost interest in her because the character they they loved was a skrull i mean i was pissed when i found out she was a skrull and now looking back  i think it was completely pointless especially with the spider-woman series being cancelled it was suppossed to be about Jessica Drew living a life she didn't create but now thats in vain.I  don't think she is on the level of the big three but she has great potential to be and she could have gotten their more quickly but everything she's done in the last 4 to 5 years has been a lie some writers like bendis have the power to make or break characters in this  case he did both but thats just my opinion

@daredevil21134: It was a clever move, but understandable to anger a lot.
But that's what I think the problem it.  The original has no development and she's already on the MAIN Avengers.  Hell, Ms. Marvel didn't even get on the main Avengers.  It just feels off.
And the secret agent thing seems to be covered by Black Widow, which makes her a bit overshadowed.
#3 Posted by daredevil21134 (12625 posts) - - Show Bio

I think it would have been clever if the skrull thing was the man focus   in her title
The black widow thing you do have a point black widow has tihe whole spy thing locked up
I do think she should be on the new avengers with mrs marvel beacuse i think they have good chemistry not the main avegers  but once again i think he's going to try to make her stand out again

@daredevil21134: I just never really thought of Spider-Woman as a huge hitter over Ms. Marvel and many other avenger girls.
#5 Posted by daredevil21134 (12625 posts) - - Show Bio

ya i know what ya mean but give her a little time and lets see what happens

i dont even know why i like her but i do, but i dont really like her its confusing isnt it

#7 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@daredevil21134: I guess.  It's just weird seeing how many fans she got out of nowhere.
#8 Posted by daredevil21134 (12625 posts) - - Show Bio

well to be honest with you i don't think its to hard for females to become popular in comics
#9 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@daredevil21134:  Tell that to Songbird and Diamondback.
#10 Posted by daredevil21134 (12625 posts) - - Show Bio

i like songbird i dont know diamondback but let m say that over again its not hard for females to get popular given the proper place to be showcase like the avengers is that better
#11 Posted by ComicMan24 (147032 posts) - - Show Bio

I remember reading somewhere that she is Bendis' favorite that's why she was in the New Avengers.

Actually this isn't true.The Wasp was an Avenger her entire career yet nobody really cared about her.

This isn't true either.Most female characters are unpopular.Even Wonder Woman the most popular isn't doing very well as far as comic sales.

Ms.Marvel has been getting the shaft since her book got cancelled.

Maybe you need to read other things she was in.Not just New Avengers.She just had a miniseries.Her origin book is out and she appeared in Alias with Jessica Jones.Her personality is just the exact opposite of Ms.Marvel.She's really nice,it's hard to make her angry,she actually deals with her personal problems on her own instead of crying to other Avengers etc. etc.

I dont know the appeal of her in honesty, i read New Avengers and she still didnt appeal to me, i picked up her origin story and nothing.  To me there should be more than 1 avenger on the main team, and im not the only one who was expecting a female character like Ms.Marvel to be on the main Avengers team.

#16 Posted by daredevil21134 (12625 posts) - - Show Bio

Thats Bendis for ya

#17 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@NeoAndroid:  Well, yeah, you kinda do need more than one Avenger for an Avenger team. :P
#18 Posted by NeoAndroid (173 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:  Yeah i had a very very bad moment there lol, i meant more than 1 woman on the team. Instead of them being all male all the time
#19 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@NeoAndroid: Believe me, I think there definitely needs to be more females on the main roster.
#20 Posted by NeoAndroid (173 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca: Im glad you agree, it may just be me but i cant grasp why they dont want to empower the women of marvel and treat them better just like adding them to the main avengers and even making something like a womans only avenger, etc
#21 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@NeoAndroid:  HA! For a while, I thought one of the Avengers Team for the Heroic Age was going to be an all female team.
I mean, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, Storm, Invisible Woman is a great start right there.
#22 Posted by daredevil21134 (12625 posts) - - Show Bio

I agree
#23 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2662 posts) - - Show Bio

Why is any character popular?
People like her.

#24 Posted by Jake Fury (19189 posts) - - Show Bio

I like Jessica but she doesn't do that much for me. I think there are quite a few more interesting females in comic land.
#25 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas: And for any reason for someone to like anything, there's got to be a reason.
I would like to know it.
#26 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2662 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:
Hard to say.
There's stuff I don't like that others do.
I don't get it and often when they explain it to me I don't get it.

she's the kinda girl you can have a drink with, then she steals your shoes

If any thing Marvel are trying to depower their best women.
Jean Grey was killed off again, Kitty Pryde has only recently returned, Storm's been seperated from the rest of the X-men by her marriage to the 'Panther.
Seems to be that any solo sereis Marvel women get are seperate to the main universe of just a joke.
I mean really!?! What's the dea l with Chris Claremonts X-women? Drawn by a euro porn artist?
#29 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas: Not only that, but I think Marvel is ignoring many of it's highly potential girls, like Songbird.
@Emperor Gonzo Noir:  That doesn't really sound like Avengers' quality...

#30 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2662 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:
It's not just about ignoring characters.
You and I'm sure others like Songbird but is she popular enough to get more exposure?
ONe big thing to remember with Spider-woman is the "Spider" part. That alone gets her noticed more than other characters.
Bottomline. Comics is a business.
#31 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas:  But she has been the character that has kept her series afloat for all this time.
Now with Luke Cage taking the spotlight, couldn't they at least share it instead of making her the next Monica?  I mean, Moonstone is starting to become a draw for her role in Dark Reign.
And that's what's annoying me about the Spider part.  They just can't get any girl off the ground that isn't part of an already existing male hero. But I just can't find ANYTHING of value to Spider-Woman.  She's just...there.
#32 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2662 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:
Spider-woman's been done well and she's been around a while.
Marvel's never tryed hard with their female characters. Al theirs come from teams or are counterparts to male characters
DC's at least has Wonder Woman and Catwoman amongst a few others.
#33 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas: Hell, they got Batgirl, Supergirl, Powergirl, Birds of Prey, Zatana I believe, Gotham Sirens, and that's off the top of my head!
Marvel is doing one-shots and their girl comics and such, but they're approaching it all wrong.  It just feels that they're just trying to please a demographic and move on.  The only female ongoings now are X-23 and Black Widow, which don't get me wrong, Black Widow is great, but it still feels off balanced compared to DC.
#34 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2662 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:
I don't mind Batgirl or Supergirl but they certainly fall into the category of female version of an existing male character.
You're right about Marvel just trying to turn out some girl comics and leave it at that. I've seen reviews and such and almost all of it looks dumbed down and feels seperate to mainstream marvel.
Diva's for insantce could've been good but it read like Marvels response to sex and the city and fabricated rather than built a friendship between the characters.
Marvel's rarely if ever wrote solo women well.
#35 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas:  As I said, there are good female characters present.
It's just that they feel that they have to girlie everything up and take away what makes them great.  I mean, Black Widow is a good one they are pursuing, and I'm glad that X-Men Legacy is Rogue based.  But a lot of the time, they drop the ball.
Hell, sometimes in New Avengers, it gets hard to tell the personalities of Jessica Jones, Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel and Mockingbird apart.
#36 Posted by Gylan Thomas (2662 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:
I'm just disapointed they can't get it together.
When DC put Bird of Prey out it was a new begining and worked very well with out having to girlie it up.
DC put Greg Rucka on Wonder Woman and Darwyn Cooke on Catwoman.
Marvel wont invest decent creators on female characters. Thety seem to have a hard time even keeping the ladies in the Marvel U.

Have I mentioned along with the many pointless deaths in recent years I was Janet Van Dyne back.
#37 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas:  Yeah, dying twice in two universes didn't help.
At least it sounds like they're trying to evolve Mockingbird in that new series.  Hopefully she'll become more than just Hawkeye's wife.
And the reason I keep stressing Songbird is because she hasn't been overshadowed by her love interest and has had some great issues of Thunderbolts that just focus upon her.  I'd hate to see this all get thrown away for Luke Cage to be the leader of another team.
Don't get me wrong, Cage is fine.  But T-Bolts 144 and New Avengers 1 REALLY play him up as being unquestionably right.

I think Jessica is a very closed off character. She had a hard life. She was constantly manipulated, and replaced by a skrull (thanks Bendis). She keeps things to herself, is a bit reckless, and has somewhat of a self destructive streak, but she's a hardcore bad-@$$!!! I don't wanna say that's very interesting, because it's not. Except the bad-@$$ part. But I think it would be interesting to see her develop into a more positive character by being an Avenger. But we're talking about Marvel here. They don't develop their characters anymore. Least not the spiders....
I heard that Bendis originally wanted to use Jessica Drew for Alias. My question is... Would the book have been the same had it stared Jessica Drew rather than Jessica Jones? Would she have gone through what Jess Jones did with the Purple man? Would she and Luke Cage have gotten married and had a baby? Would she not have been a skrull? Just curious....
Also, does anyone know just what the heck Spider-Woman's costume has to do with Spiders!?! What's the triangle on her head stand for? How about the pattern on her torso? Anyone? HELP!

#39 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@E.I.S.A.M.:  Well, she was created just so Marvel could keep hold of the name Spider-Woman...
#40 Posted by E.I.S.A.M. (360 posts) - - Show Bio
@Cafeterialoca:
Yeah, that's fine. But what about her costume, is what I'm asking. Or should I have taken that as an "I d'know?" :P
#41 Posted by Cafeterialoca (1484 posts) - - Show Bio
@E.I.S.A.M.: I guess cause they like the costume design?
In my opinion, she looks like Ketchup and Mustard girl.
#42 Posted by PrinceIMC (5422 posts) - - Show Bio

I like Spider-Woman because despite the original intent being a kind of female Spider-man she is so different from him. Plus she's a super-spy and private eye with powers.

#43 Posted by NeoAndroid (173 posts) - - Show Bio
@Gylan Thomas: I so hope you are kidding with the last comment about the porn artist
But yeah, Marvel do depower there most powerful females, actually the depower almost every female character. Like one goes from being a strong character then to a solo series then to a casual date and a cameo. It makes me sick, because we live in a world of equal oppurtaintys (sp), so why dont they show that in comics. It would atleast attract more females to there cause and the most annoying thing is because you know they have the characters they showed them off, now there what just, a trophy?

@NeoAndroid:

@KNIGHT SAVIOR: Thing is EVERY COMIC BOOK FEMALE IS HOT! (Don't you respond with old lady's, etc, you know what I mean.)
Just why is Spider-Woman getting this great treatment when she doesn't have much of a personality behind it.

Tight red spandex, long black hair, well-built figure, able to shoot energy from her hands...
