why wasn't spider-man made to be an original avenger since, he's like marvels icon?

DC's icon is superman and he's in the JL so why not marvel's icon?

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be some confused newbie who'd just picked up an issue of Superior Spider-Man. Consider my hopes dashed.

Anyway, like others have said, he was 15.

He was viewed as an outcast for decades, so there's that too.

He was to young and it was against his characterization at the time.

When he first started out he was considered an Outlaw in-universe. So they kept him solo to keep the Hero with bad publicity angle.

He was offered a chance to join in the 60s and declined because he needs to continue to support aunt may and further his education.

I wouldn't be surprised if Avengers started off primarily as a dumping ground for characters who couldn't hold their own series' or whom needed a boost in exposure, with them maybe all having fanbases which weren't quite large enough.

You dump them all in the same comic and thereby combine the sales, you can also cross-pollinate the characters so an Iron Man fan might buy the Avengers for Iron Man, but then get into Captain America and start buying Captain America comics too etc.

These days that's obviously no longer the case, Avengers is a huge brand in its own right.
