If you asked me before Amazing Spider-Man #700, I would say that he's an average nerd, yet he's been through many trials and hardships, stood up to the toughest dangers in his universe, and ultimately knows what it means to be a hero, all while maintaining the same humanity as the rest of the world.

Ask me after, and he's just some villainous nut who possessed Spider-Man, killed him, and stole his life.

    This.

Also, the fact is that as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, he had to overcome all sorts of insane challenges, especially for a teenager. He had to deal with drugs, peer pressure, love, marriage, life and death, basically, the ups and downs of life, which is what propelled his fame through the 60s, 70s, 80s, and once he became an established character, that's pretty much set.

Also, much like Bat Man, they got lucky enough to be able to create Spiderman at a time when all the cool motifs weren't taken yet. He's just a guy who can wall walk, some extra strength, and great balance/agility. Clear, to the point. If they make a spider themed character tomorrow they have to figure out how to differentiate him from Peter Parker so they'll add some detail which muddies up the basic motif. I like his personality alot. Just started watching the Ultimate Spider Man cartoon and there's nothing better than seeing PP in action quipping all the way.

He's just a nice guy. Not "relatable" by a long shot, but just a nice guy. Spidey is who got me into comics, even though I don't read much Marvel anymore (aside from Spider-Man).

@ComicFan93: Spiderman was made by repenting due one selfish act that leads to massive consequence. In his dieing breath Spiderman gave Octavious his memories. Now it is Doc Octs turn now has allot of repents. It works Mach and songbird. Let Pete rest he has done enough.

That villainous nut now has to deal Spiderman problems if want to be Spiderman. The memories going to be one hard hit for him. That is going to be heavy. He will hear the line "With great power comes great responsibility" a lot and wait till he remembers the clones. He is going to have one heck of identity crisis

One of the greatest reason is that spidey's a "teenage SUPERHERO", not a "teenage SIDEKICK IN TRAINING". Most people who read spidey are teenagers, and they easily relate to that. And also the Death of Gwen Stacy kinda started the maturing of comics
