Spider-Man
Character » Spider-Man appears in 17246 issues.
Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter learned that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became Spider-Man.
Who is the better Spider-Man Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield?
Gotta say Andrew Garfield. I think he's just flat-out a better actor. (and I liked Tobey's take on Spidey)
I have to go with Garfield. Maguire cried horribly and unconvincingly at the drop of a hat. He never had the look or build for Spider-Man or Peter Parker, and I don't think he ever took the role seriously. Garfield looked Like Peter Parker jumped off the page and into the screen. He had the perfect build for Spider-Man and his emotional moments in the movie were all very convincing.
Toby played a terrible Parker and Spiderman. He played Parker way to corny and not enough intelligence and wit. His Spiderman was unremarkable.
Garfield is just a better actor.
I liked Garfield alot better. I feel like Andrew really gave Spider-man his balls back. Whereas Tobey made Peter Parker and Spider-man look like a dripping wet pu$$y. Hopefully whoever they get to play MJ will bring back the sexiness and awesomness that Dunst ruined in the old movies.
Looking at this thread seems like a major contradiction to what I read on the news and from movie critics' review of the Spiderman movies. A lot of them seem to like Toby Maguire. I thought I was the only one who liked Andrew Garfield until I came here to this thread to find that I am in the majority.
Anyone else experience this?
@dvader: Same for me,my family(who I went to see it with) all seemed to prefer Toby while I preferred Andrew Garfield as he was just more like how I thought he should be I didn't expect this overwhelming majority on here....

It seems the general populace prefer Tobey, but that's only because those were the movies they all know and love. The real Spidey fans know Garfield was much better for the character (though to be fair, it wasn't Tobey's fault. He was held back by the script and direction. He did great with what he had)
Andrew, he's muuch better than Tobey, seriously.

Neh, they don't know anything. The same thing would happen if Andrew as the first Spidey (Or not, he's awesome :p). I guess they don't want to accept changes.
You can also try to find a critic that has an similar opnion as you, and see what he has to say about ASM, and other movies. But I also saw some critics saying pretty good things about Andrew.
If you ignore SpiderMan 3 I'd say that Maguire's portrayal of Spiderman out shines Garfield's but Garfield isn't far behind if he gets a second movie I think he could pull ahead in my opinion but even if he was a much better Spiderman instead of an marginally better or just equally good one he couldn't take the title after only one movie
Spider-Man 1 and 2 were good movies. Not because of Tobey Mcguire.

Fair enough......but he didn't hurt
IMO, unlike Tobey, Andrew actually looks like Peter Parker for starters. I always thought that Mcguire is too, ummm, round?
tobey honestly sucks, and the reason why i never liked spiderman was because of him and he screamed more than mary jane, and it was a high pitched scream to add insult to injury.
but andrew's head is REALLY tiny looking and flat (at least from common angles) and his hair looks bigger than his head

This! 100%. Tobey was such a "round" Peter, it bugged the shit outta me. Still does, everytime I think of the old spider-man movies I can't get his cirlce head out of the picture.
OMG. I cannot believe so many people would vote for Andrew Garfield instead of the talented actor that is Tobey Mcguire.
I just cannot believe it. I mean like ASM all you want, but come on, Toeby Mcguire was the best Spider-man.

Is that a joke?

Are you the joke?
@sethysquare: No because I'm not the guy high on nostalgia. 'Toby is talented' seriously, his peter wasn't a genius, over exaggerated amounts of whining past the first movie and downright flat as spider-man due to the lack of quips.

Tobey Mcguire is GOD AWFUL.
Are you telling me that God send Tobey to be so bad, that he is evidence that God is real and he hates mankind.
Because that make sense.
I cant understand how people like Tobey as Spiderman or as an actor.
Tobey is as bad as Nicholas Cage, the thing is that Nic Cage at least is funny.
@Death Certificate: He is a very talented actor. He was in so many breakout roles and did such a wonderful job with them. Nominated for so many awards. Andrew Garfield just pales in comparison. I hate it whenever a new film comes up people just diss the old one.

You're arguing just for the sake of arguing, aren't you? I think many are willing to believe that Tobey Maguire is actually a good actor (I personally don't know, I never seen him anywhere exept Spiderman), but as Parker he is just terribly miscast.
@Kyle_Dornez: I'm not, why would you think so? I genuinely like Tobey in Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, Brothers, Spiderman and I'm excited for Great Gatsby.

Oh, Pleasantville. I remember Pleasantville, it was good. Tobey Maguire was there? O_o Anyway it's more of a scripts fault than actors that he isn't the best Spider-man. Well that and his round face. :P
@Kyle_Dornez: To me, he will always be the only Spider-man. Just like how some people think Christopher Reeves is the only Superman.
To be honest, I cannot think of a single movie in which I liked Toby Maguire's acting. Whereas Andrew was an almost perfect Spidey
Also if you watch the many interviews, talk shows, press releases, and behind the scenes specials. You can tell that Andrew really did take the role very seriously.
i didnt like how they tried to supermodernize peter parker in ASM. he didnt look like a nerd to me.(skinny jeans, skateboard, contacts) that is not how i want peter parker to look like. i liked andrew garfields spiderman better because he added the humor and he looked more like a teenager in tights than toby and he had the web-shooters.
@ratman19 I felt that the way he looked didn't matter to me. He still acted like a nerd being more shy and resined and being brilliantly smart person for someone his age. Even with the skateboard they made good use of that, with him writing scientific equations on his board showing that this is a kid who loves science like Peter Parker. Personally I preferred Garfield. He was better as Peter Parker for all the points I said above and he was better as Spidey for being more witty and badass. I did like Tobey as Spidey but i think the writing let him down a little. The writing for Garfield's Spidey complimented him more as he seemed like a mix of regular Peter/Spidey and Ultimate Peter/Spidey and something a little new which I liked and appreciated more.
