Well the thing is, what happens in the comics, isn't always because the hero could beat someone. What happens is what the writer wants to happen. If you look, spider-man outclasses cap on every level.
To me, that's sort of lame. If we don't use the comics as a reference point for these characters, what do we have to determine what they can and can't do? If we just used character stats and not what they've actually accomplished, theoretically more than half of them would be unbeatable. There is a lot more to a character than just their stats. Yes, Captain America is severely outclassed by Spidey, but we know that the reason why Spidey loses to Cap is because he respects Cap too much, and doesn't want to hurt him. You would need to take that into consideration before a battle, otherwise most of these battles wouldn't work.
