Sony's execs previously hinted they want to create spinoff films and today, they made it official: they're moving forward with at least two spinoff projects. The first has been teased a gazillion times now: the Sinister Six. Not only have they dropped the name before (one of Marc Webb's photos had it plastered on a wall), but they've been building Peter's rogue gallery and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is adding plenty of new characters. If you have a keen eye, then you know Venom also exists in this universe (Harry's display in the trailer said "Venom storage").

Drew Goddard, Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci, Jeff Pinker, and Ed Solomon will "collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films." They'll work with producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad and director Marc Webb. Kurtzman, Solomon and Orci are tasked with writing Venom's movie and Kurtzman will direct. Meanwhile, Goddard is confirmed to write the Sinister Six movie and maybe direct. The press release says the five writers, two producers and Webb have created a "franchise brain trust" to make sure the universe keeps a continuous tone as it expands.

Based on what we've seen in the cinematic universe so far, who would you want on the Sinister Six's roster and why? Seeing as Venom is at Oscorp, it could be inspired by the Ultimate version of the symbiote. Are you excited or what, Viners?

See this is why characters are appearing/teased in ASM 2, it's not to make it "over-crowded" they are just intro's for there own films

I just feel bad for DC. Marvel, Sony AND Fox are doing more movies than DC. That awkward moment when Spider-Man universe has more movies announced than a whole company.

They are banking a lot of value on a film that severely underperformed at the box office. Sony is going to end up running spider-man into the ground if they are not careful.

Also isnt Goddard writing Dysney's Daredevil?....

EDIT: Read through the official press release, it seems like Sinister Six is going to be its own movie along side Venom and ASM 3. Interesting. I'm kind of wondering what a movie focused on a team of super villains would look like? A heist movie with super powers maybe?

Out of these 5 writers I like 1 (a lot), 2 I’m interested in, and another 2 I absolutely despise. Drew Goddard is the most interesting name of the bunch as he is tapped to work with Marvel on the DareDevil Netflix series. Jeff Pinker has mainly worked in television on shows like Fringe, LOST, and Ally McBeal, most recently rewritingAmazing Spider-Man 2 with Orci and Kurtzman (how does that work). Ed Solomon is a seasoned writer best known writing for Bill & Ted, Super Mario Bros., Men in Black, and Now You See Me. Leaving Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to be the two writers I despise, I just don’t think they are good, they write big set piece scenes not character (see: Into Darkness, Star Trek and Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers).

I think a Venom movie based on the most recent comics run where he's a super soldier would be fun. It'll be interesting to see how a Sinixter Six film functions, it's about the villians so that's weird I guess it'll be a heist film.

I don't even know how this is going to work. It's either going to be great or a huge flops.

@jonny_anonymous: Well you're right about the reference thing, but the movie is still getting over crowded in its own right. I get they need to introduce all six at some point, but they might be rushing it putting 3 in this movie to get the six out faster. Just an opinion.

I don't understand. How is Sinister Six a spin-off? If they aren't fighting Spidey, which would make this simply another Amazing Spidey movie, and not a spin-off, then what the hell is happening here? Venom, I could see them doing Agent Venom as a spin-off, but they kind just spoiled Venom being in ASM3 (especially since we now know that neither ASM2 or 3 is actually a Sinister Six movie) by telling us this.

Okay so they're doing a sinister six movie? What? How can they do a sinister six movie which isn't about them vs spidey? and if they do that, then that's a spiderman movie.

There's too many people surprised about a super-villain movie. Like all over the internet people going "How does that work?" Has no one ever seen a gangster movie before?

Also, usually in these sorts of stories Rhino and Sandman are placed in a grey area as relateable bad guys, wanting to do one more job before they go straight, needing money for removal of Rhino suit etc etc, or sometimes they're just blackmailed.

Though I guess the Ultimate Rhino suit seen in Amazing Spider-Man 2 already kills one of those options.

It's the same when it's a movie about a B-List superhero, everybody is all like "Oh nobody knows them, this will fail" and yet movies come out every single month with characters nobody has ever heard of before.

I could say Layer Cake. But you are given a reason to be on those characters side's, they're not hard-core bad guys. With the sinister six they are 100% evil.

Sure, Fox and Sony have more movies than DC at the moment, But how many of those movies were X-men 1,2, 3, Wolverine Origins, Fantastic 4 1&2, Spider-man 3, and Amazing Spider-man1? At this point I'd be surprised if Sony and Fox were blips on DC's radar. It just seems like Fox, and Sony are trying desperately to hold on to their respective franchises, and not have the rights revert back to Marvel, by announcing as many movies as possible. Days of Future Past isn't even out yet, and already 3 X-men films have been announced.

Don't think Sinister 6 will have a large female draw with the characters who have been announced so far: Electro/Green Goblin Jr/Rhino.

Also, I don't think the last film did well enough to spin off so many movies. ASM2 hasn't even come out yet. This is financially risky. Maybe Venom will do okay if it's not too expensive, but I don't think SS will do well. You can try to compare it to Ocean's 11, but it won't have what made Ocean's 11 successful: George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Yea that's worst too because all those characters have a history/backstory that is sometimes slowly revealed to us organically and subtlety, yet every time I suggest they skip the origin and reveal the history to us over the course of the movie as if it is a real movie, I always get shot down.

I'd just like to say that I enjoyed most of those.
