Over the years, Spider-Man has grown from a simple street-level Super-Hero taking on Electro and the Sandman to one of the Avengers strongest members. This is due , partly to the experience he's gained but also to the fact that he has teamed up with almost every hero imaginable. In the real world Spider-Man is one of the most famous and adored super-heroes in existence but in the comic books it's another story. Despite being in most major teams it is often pointed out that he isn't respected very much. For example, in The New Avengers comic book during Agamotto's attack when it is pointed out that Hawkeye possesses an emergency Avengers call where as Spider-Man does not. These little twists allow him to remain a funny super-hero as well as an important one.

Moving on to the subject now, In the not so recent Avengers : X-Sanction, Cable mentions that despite being a joke, Spider-Man goes down as the greatest hero in history. This has obvioulsy never been confirmed from what I have read (but please if you have inform me). Despite possibly being a teaser or a joke on the writers part the new Avengers Vs. X-Men issue 9 cover and description (Cover and Description below) seems to suggest that it is up to him to stop the Phoenix Five (Or four as of issue 8, sorry spoilers). What is your opinion ?

    Source Marvel Comics Database :

    • Their numbers dwindling, the Avengers stage a daring raid on the X-Men’s prison to rescue their captive members—and you won’t believe where it is!

    • Alliances begin to change as the nature of the Phoenix becomes apparent!

    • And in the end, it all comes down to Spider-Man!

I don't know how would Spider-man finnish all this, but I know that Peter would not give up, in the issue 27 of the New Avengers Peter had a talk with Hope, he taught her that "With great power, comes great responsibility", maybe all this would finish in the same way, but I don't know.

I'll say. He is brilliant; he's not overpowered or underpowered, numerous interesting characters first appeared in Spiderman (eg. Punisher) and he's witty and funny which not a lot of other characters can say, and he's just....amazing.

Hell, I grew up to Spider-man, he's my favorite character of all times and that's simply because he never gives up. He's tackled foes that far outmatch him without a second tought, and fiction or not he's always been a character I could relate to. I'll have to say tho that I loved the recent changes (since the likes of Big Time) it setted up the character in a new direction and considering that Osborn became head of national security and Octupus threatened the entire planet the natural thing for Pete is to evolve. (His gadgets of his are a big sign of that.) I'm not too happy about AvX but I'll buy Issue 9 just for him.

To me, he is the greatest, and I am a fan of many heroes : Batman, Green Lanterns, Iron Man, Squirrel Girl (joking), but he is a character I could relate to.

No doubt that he is certainly one of the greatest heroes in comic book history DC and Marvel and all the others included - i honestly cant name a ''single'' greatest superhero, there are a small handful of very important superheroes that i would call greatest in history who all contributed greatly to how the modern comic book is today.

Where Superman was the template for all modern heroes, Spider-Man was the one who saved the modern comic book (My opinion)
