Over the weekend, Deadline reported that Sony’s been screen-testing actors for Marc Webb’s forthcoming SPIDER-MAN reboot. The names you know already are Jamie Bell, Logan Lerman, Anton Yelchin and Aaron Johnson. Andrew Garfield and Alden Ehrenreich also tested; they’ve been in the running, although their credits haven’t been as high-profile as those first four names. Garfield was in Terry Gilliam’s THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASUS (which, incidentally, was Heath Ledger’s last movie) and he’ll be playing one of the Facebook founders in that FB “Year One” movie, THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Ehrenreich’s been in an episode of SUPERNATURAL, and he was most recently in Francis For Coppola’s latest movie, TETRO. Frank Dillane and Michael Angarano were also on the list of “finalists” that Sony’s working from, although they apparently haven't tested yet. Dillane was a young Tom Riddle in the last HARRY POTTER movie, while Angarano’s actually already played a superhero teen in that SKY HIGH movie from a couple years back.
So that’s the final eight. It’s almost like March Madness! Then again, I remember Captain America’s casting race going through many names before Chris Evans came in at the last minute to land the part, so maybe a dark horse will ride in at the end to become Spidey here, too. == TEASER ==
Marc Webb hasn’t made a project of this scale before - - he’s only directed one movie before this - - and Deadline’s stressing that he and Sony are taking their time to do this right. Hence, the release date is still more than two years off, giving them plenty of time to find the right lead and finesse all the effects and 3D tech. I'd say that's a smart approach.
Anyway, here are headshots of the new challengers. Angarano, Garfield, Dillane & Ehrenreich. Do you think any of them have that elusive "Peter Parker" look?
