Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, which he could have prevented, Peter learned that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became the Amazing Spider-Man!
I don't think they use the word because... It's not a symbiote in the movie. I think in the movie they just make it a substance, a chemical, or something of that sort. Alien life form, i think...
We'll have to wait and see I guess. I'm 99% sure it's extra terrestrial in origin. Remember that many people don't know what a symbiote is, so using it would just confuse people.

I think they'll go the route of the 90s cartoon and have John Jameson bring it back on some moon rock samples or something. Why else introduce him as MJ's love interest in #2?

"hmmm... be interesting if they use an alien life form when they said it would be too hard to use an alien life form for the proper phoenix...M"
The phoenix was a cosmic entity and pretty much embodiment of life itself. That'd be a little harder to pass off than alien goo. Woulda liked to seem them try though.
