just like the other two here have said, read from the start of JMS's run up to Dying Wish. That would be issues 471-697(issue 471 is the same as vol.2 #30). Then I'd recommend 1-294. This includes Roger Stern's run which I and many others regard as the greatest spidey writer ever.

Paul Jenkins stuff was also really good, he worked on Peter Parker Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man Vol 2.

    JMS' Spider-Man run.

^^^ Definitely this. One of the best runs ever.

^^^ I wish all Spider-Man stories were this good.

Also check out "Family Business" by Waid, Robinson and Dell'Otto

For classic masterful story-telling check out "Kraven's Last Hunt" from Web of Spider-Man #31-32, The Amazing Spider-Man #293-294, and The Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132.

whatever you do, skip the gwen stacy affair arc, not sure whats the name for that arc, but it haunts me till this very day. It was the only thing that i hoped OMD retcon, but apparently I heard that it was not and is still considered canon.

Grim hunt, back in black, the other, basically all of the stories by JMS, and, if you're up to it, the clone saga.

I quite liked reading some of Spiderman's early appearances, they allow you to see how the character has grown from his beginning days.
