Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter learned that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became Spider-Man.
Amazing Fantasy 15 = Nerdy, shy, socially awkward, resentful (note that originally Pete had no excuse for not stopping the burglar)
Spider-Man #1 - Spider-Man #7 = Post-Spider-Bite he still has a very nerdy appearance but becomes more confident (its mentioned that he has asked out Liz Allen on multiple occasions, he back-talks Flash Thompson every time he's insulted, and he flirts with Betty Brant), he's quite resentful at this stage but knows he has to do the right thing regardless, he's also still a social outcast.
Spider-Man #8 - ~#14 = His glasses are broken by Flash and after a while his eyes simply adapt to not wearing glasses, this makes him look a little less nerdy (I think Liz mentions he looks a lot better without them). He loses his temper and ends up in the ring with Flash Thompson, afterwards Flash wonders whether Pete is as bad as he thought he was. A very ill Pete is unmasked by Doc Ock but because of how poorly he fought its believed that he was pretending to be Spider-Man to try to help Betty, this gives him major rep points with Liz Allen, but its too late, Pete is still resentful and he no longer wants anything to do with any of them.
Spider-Man #15-#30 = Starts dating Betty Brant, and most of his resentment dissipates, he always remains a smartass though.
Spider-Man #31-#39 = Starts college, splits up with Betty, Aunt May gets ill. Pete is very distracted during this time due to Aunt May's illness so he doesn't make many friends at college during the first few weeks, worse still he walks off multiple times deep in thought whilst people are trying to be friendly with him, giving him the reputation of being "too good to talk to talk to ordinary folk"
Spider-Man #40- = Makes friends with Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy (who's been interested in him for a while), finally meets Mary Jane and starts hanging around with her and the others at the Coffee Bean Barn, moves in with Harry, gets a Motorbike, starts dating Gwen Stacy and going to parties etc etc. From this point onwards you could argue that there's no particularly nerdy elements at all, and that Pete is simply a very intelligent guy who's easy-going, gets on with people and has a tendency towards introspection.
In the 60's wearing glasses and being smart = nerd. Today we have the benefit of hindsight.
He had a job at a world renowned newspaper in HS, dated the hot secretary, got into an amazing college where the two hottest chicks on Campus wanted to hang out and date him. And his best friend is a billionaire.

when you say it like that peter should be the guy everyone wants to be friends with.
That's why i don't get why people say he was to confident in the movies. He was only really nerdy in the first issue. After that he became a smart-ass social outcast but the "nerd" traits went away.
