Spider-Man
Character » Spider-Man appears in 17246 issues.
Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter learned that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became Spider-Man.
Off My Mind: Spider-Man, The Amazing Tailor
In some origins, we've seen that Peter actually made costume sketches. His goal was to be a performer and earn a boatload of cash to help his dear old Aunt May and Uncle Ben. He couldn't be a performer wearing an old sweatsuit. He came up with an iconic costume design that still holds up decades after it was first seen.
But how did he get this costume? Peter Parker had to use his sewing skills to make a costume. Not only was Peter a gifted student in high school, he clearly was a master with a needle and thread.
== TEASER == Being able to sew and repair your own costume is an essential trait that all superheroes should have. Spider-Man has had his costume ripped and torn time and time again. Luckily he's a wiz at the repairs and can usually avoid embarrassing situations.
I've often wondered how he was able to make such a versatile costume. Did he just use a needle and thread? Was a sewing machine involved? How available was spandex in the 60s? Is his costume even spandex? The costume Spider-Man wore in the recent movies would be beyond the sewing skills of a teenage seamster, regardless of how talented or motivated they might be.
Spider-Man isn't the only hero with a knack for making costumes. Janet Van Dyne, aka the Wasp, used her fashion design skills to create costume after costume. I can't think of another hero that has gone through as many different costumes as Janet. Reed Richards is known for making the Fantastic Four's costumes. You could almost say that he cheats a little bit using unstable molecules and, I'm sure, technology more advanced than anything NASA uses for space exploration to make the costumes.
Because Spider-Man is forced to do his own costume making and repairs, this sets him above the other heroes. He may often be down on his luck but at least he will be dressed in a snazzy costume while fighting the bad guys.
When Peter Parker is down on his luck and needs cash, do you think he should start a career as a fashion designer?
" Actually Daredevil did the same, and by his first costume you can tell he's blind. That's SO strange you said that. I was talking to my dad last night about first appearance costumes that aren't the definitive look for characters, brought up DD's yellow, and almost said exactly what you did word for word. Great minds think alike. =]

There was a JMS Spider-Man issue about a superhero tailor, it was awesome!
When Tony tells Peter he was creating a new costume for him (in Amazing Spiderman #529) Peter asked what was wrong with his usual costume and Tony responded that it was "made of clothe", to which Peter responded something to the effect of "was working with a limited budget".
So the spiderman costume was made of clothe vice the spandex used by other heroes.
Another mention of the sewing of the costume came after Peter's resurrection (from The Other storyline) when Peter goes to get a quick fix from some old guy that does other heroes and villains costumes. The old guy starts insulting the replacement sewing work that was done previously and Peter begins to comment about his wife (MJ) doing it but stops himself from blurting that bit of info out.
So not only can Peter sew but it seems he's even better than MJ.
When Peter Parker is down on his luck and needs cash... he becomes a scientist
& makes new armors on the side
Perhaps one of his hidden powers and instincts is weaving things. It could come from the memes of the spider. This could be an under used under rated power. Maybe Spiderman will discover what a nack he has for weaving threads were he to try it more. He could make some much needed extra money on the side repairing costumes for other heroes.
And look what it says about his toenails here.
" Actually Daredevil did the same, and by his first costume you can tell he's blind. That statement just killed me. Almost spit tea all over my computer.
"
I mean, he's a genius, he can probably pretty much do wha'eva he wants to do. I think his intellect is one thing that should be play'd up more.
Well, spiders are weavers, so it sort of makes sense that he would be good at making his own costume. He could get a job as a tailor, or repair other people's costumes as a side job.
How and when did he learn to sew? That skill really came out of nowhere. It's still awsome how he's able to do it himself though.
Sewing skills definitely a result of his spider powers. Weaving, and threading, etc. It has spider powers written all over it
Spider-Man used his new found dexterity to sew his own costume. It was easy when he had the powers of a spider. I'm guessing it's the same story for Daredevil. Plus a real person had to create the costume for the movie. I'm guessing their skills with hand-eye cordination, measurement, and control can't be much better then Spider-man's. Am I the only one on ComicVine that knows this?

I kinda' think the whole 'needle-and-thread' tailor thing suits peter well, what being spider-man and all. and I'm sorry, but I literally LOLed at the red skull thing

I remember in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon that Peter wore a sweater and long-johns costume outside when it was snowing, and he was complaining he looked like the Spectacular Spider-Mush. Thought that was cute.
maybe he has the power to weave things like a spider (spiders weave webs) he sews costumes, tomato tomato
In the comics (or say the "Marvel universe") I can believe this guy with his motivation, determination and will power to become the "Spider-man" would have made this costume.
In the movies, with the super complicated white-web pattern in relief and a costume that costs a million dollar to build, I have problems "believing" the costume part...
