Hi. I just started reading Spider-Verse and I'm enjoying the characters being introduced. Never really read anything Spider-Man related before but I would appreciate if you guys could help me get started.

Some of the best stuff,regarding Spider-Man are written in the 21st Century.

I recommend starting Amazing Spider-Man with issue #471(which goes up to issue #550), which is written by JMS.It's one of the best runs on the character,and really captures his unique approach on life.

Now,if you want to KNOW the character,and not read Amazing,in particular, try reading Ultimate Spider-Man.It started in 2000,and went until issue 160.
It's a different dimension,i know, but Peter Parker's character is kept in tact by a wonderful writer called Brian Michael Bendis.

I recommend USM more than Amazing,actually.....

• Marvel Knights Spider-Man 1-4 actually the the whole run 1-22. (NOT NOT to be confused with the 2013 5 issue Marvel Knights: Spider-Man which was simply aweful)
• I would also recommend Amazing Spider-Man #471-#550, JMS's run

Others I would also recommend

• Ultimate Spider-Man - from the beginning
• Spider-Man Love Mary Jane - from the beginning

@punyparker: They may not be good but they're essential reading material nonetheless for any Spider-Man fan. Some of them were defining moments in the characters mythos.

And the dud/gal should read the good stuff,to understand the character first......not jump into OMD and Clone Saga right away,you serious?!!..no.

I started reading with Straczynski's take on Spider-Man and became a fan. I think that would be a good place to start.

All of these are excellent choices (Although if we're also talking about Alt-Us I'd also recommend Spidergirl and Spiderman 2099).

And, as others had said before me - Don't even think about going near OMD/BND or OMIT. Those are awful.

I would also recommend Spider-Girl from the MC2 universe

I know, just differentiating it from the Spider-girl title of the main universe.

Once you know the basics, I'd recommend:

- Gauntlet and Grim Hunt

- Pretty much everything from ASM #648 onwards to ASM #700, then read SSM, then get back to ASM. I really like @danslott's run, as it is very refreshing and seeing Spidey finally start living up to his full potential is pretty awesome!

His "full potential" is not being able to do anything by himself,and the Avengers showing up every two issues?!!

His full potential is landing a private jet (a feat of at least 60 tons, not including the thrust), building better suits than Iron Man (Stealth, EotE), showing off his genius, finally having some money, being a more essential member of the Avengers and Future Foundation, etc.

I understand the frustration with the Avengers showing up every 2 issues (although I think the FF were there equally) but I don't know why you say that he could not do anything himself?

@spider_gwen: if you want to start from the beginning of a series then get ultimate spiderman. It's a good book and is more recent so there is only a few trades it takes to be up to date with it. If your okay with reading black and white books then get some if the spiderman essentials. You can find the first one onwards on amazon for cheap but I would suggest you start with vol 10 onwards since stern is awesome.

As much as I love Spidey, and wish that those feats could truly be counted, they can't.

Firelord's battle was PIS. I wish he was at that strength level, but honestly, he isn't. I hope Spider-Verse gives Peter some nice strength upgrades though so he can become one of Marvel's main powerhouses (beat up Thor! :) )

The X-Men battle wasn't even a clear win. He knocked them over and gave them a good fight, before escaping. (IMO, Spidey should have been able to beat all those characters if Prof X wasn't there. That's why I want him to get telepathic shields)

Dude,if you're over-analysing it,you can contradict almost everything in comics......these fights happened and Spidey won.Period.
