ive read practically every spider-man issue since JMS but never gone much earlier...is the stan lee and steve dikto stuff worth going for ?

I think Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's stuff is good and all, but I didn't really start to appreciate Stan Lee's stuff until John Romita Sr. joined him. The Lee/Romita run is pure gold. The End of Green Goblin and Death of Captain Stacy stories are amazing! I still have yet to read Spider-Man No More, though, but I will read it eventually. But seriously, I just read the Death of Captain Stacy a couple days, and it actually left an impact on me, even after all these years. It's much better than all that '90s symbiote crap. (I like Venom, but he was ridiculously overexposed--same with Carnage.)

I've read a ton of it just to read it and have that knowledge....here's the thing though....comics were completely different back then...today comics are very minimalistic when it comes to dialogue...most books now a days let the art do a lot of the story telling...back then though there was a TON of exposition and I do mean a TON....characters would explain every single little thing that they did and if you aren't used to this type of storytelling then it can be a bit jarring and off putting

for me I couldn't read Amazing from issue 1 forward...I just couldn't take the writing style of the times...so I read the important stuff

Classic Spider-Man is great. Id take that over any of the modern stuff.. Read it like the rest of these peeps say.

Modern stuff is more up-to-date and (usually) have better art!

You have to appreciate the art back then vs. the art today. Looking back then with modern eyes it's very plain a square and almost boring. It wasn't really until Neal Adams when you'd get the kind of art you see today. But if you can look at it from the perspective of someone first seeing it, it's awesome. What Marvel did for upgrading the Super-hero genre they also did with the art compaired to DC. But yes, loads and loads and loads of exposition.

That is a matter of opinion and style.

Read the older stuff it is great (most of it anyway).

I may not be that old (I’m only 31 almost a child), and even today I truly enjoy old comic they are great. You have to remember it was a different era and comic book had a different style back then (not to mention the lack of computers)

and john romita sr. art is amazing even compare to the “new” standards

The first 30 issues are a little dated, and largely cover origin stories that everybody already knows.

After that though it really gets going with ~40-80 odd being gold (Goblin and Spider-Man learn each others identities, tablet of time saga, Spider-Man No More, Grip of the Rhino Saga (first MJ), Doc Ock Wins etc) this is my favourite run of Spider-Man.

This was a time more of romance and adventure in comparison to other eras though, so if you want all action and no character interaction, or soap opera style elements then you probably won't enjoy it as much.

If you've read Blue, then you know what to expect as that was based on this era.

Any classic comic book is fun to read. Whether its Fantastic 4, Spiderman, X-Men they are all worth checking out if you want an easy fun read.

@darkseid011: Just as many bad writers as well as "good" ones. Even then, they tend to make mistakes in their writing because so many writes the same character.

I once read a list of Spidy characters and the dates of their first apperances & it breaks down something like this. The first year of The Amazing Spider-Man had the introductions of dozens and dozens of new characters and story lines, when I stopped reading The Amazing Spider-Man after OMD there were 7 new characters and 1 story line that was not tied to a story line from the past. (it was the Ezekiel and Morlun one from JMS) (Man I wish i could find that guys blog) Since I can't post proof of what I read (seriously, it was awesome) the validity of my statement is debatable (even tho' I'd swear on a stack of bibles). So you can read the stories they're pumping out nowadays or go read the stories that are the foundation of what you're reading today.

The older stuff can seem kinda clunky compared to modern comics but it's still good quality. Plus dat Ditko art is fantastic.

They are worth it! Trust me, you won't regret it. Though you should read spider-man blue first to see if you like the tone and the art since it's pretty similar to the comics of that age.
