I think we were kinda supposed to hate the character in contrast to Peter. He was an extremely powerful yet irresponsible jerk, while Peter was Mr. Responsibility and a much more likable character, and the moral of the story was, the spider gave Peter powers, but it was Peter himself who became a hero. The Parker Particles gave Alpha powers, but they didn't make him a hero because he didnt have Peter's moral compass.

    But who cares?

Doesn't excuse the fact that it wasn't a good story.

Exactly and this story was part of Spidey's 50th anniversary celebration, smh.

That's kinda subjective, and while I agree it wasn't a great story, some of the concepts it toyed around with were pretty cool, though not properly executed. I personally enjoyed the .1 stories more as part of spidey's 50th anniversary celebration.

Alpha was deliberately suppose to be a terrible character so that we can get a contrast between him and peter.
