CALLING IT NOW - AMAZING SPIDER-MAN MOVIE... will suck.

    1) The Lizard and Proto Goblin alone are not enough of a threat for Spider-Man, who can taunt them while swinging overhead, web them from above, climb away from them, etc. There should be a supervillain handler using the Lizard, ala Callisto in "Spider-Man".

    2) Both are feral, ground-based assailants (Dr. Connors, too, when he is the Lizard loses his mind a bit) not a mental threat to a high-school, high-climbing whiz kid.

    3) Lizard makeup FX (and especially Proto FX) won't be good enough to inspire fear or be believable.

    4) Spider-Man's costume was made in the texture-fetishist style, way overboard and busy, eyes too small.

    5) Introducing Gwen means her dad, Captain Stacy, will be involved - taking up more time that could have been devoted to adding one (just ONE, Spider-Man 3...!) other handler villain, or building up Peter.

My favorite character, but I call it: the film will SUCK - even though I <3 Emma Stone.

Ugh... Boots, gloves, tiny eyes, suit - looks like all of them were unfinished rushes for an art class project. Web shooters are great, but despite the good cast, the handwriting is on the wall, as it was for Spider-Man 3... ESPECIALLY NOW that we can see the direction the Lizard is taking:

Actually, If they wanted to they could just end the current License deals with the other studios and bring them back. They just have not as yet.

You're waaaaay to jaded, man. I think just this first ASM film is going to trump the last trilogy in the same way Batman Begins trumped all previous Batman films. It's promised to be a grittier and more contemporary take on Spider-Man. Plus you really think Lizard isn't a match for Spidey? Isn't he one of is oldest and greatest foes??? I'm sure on film he'll be a closer adaptation to the current 616 Lizard. Hijacking people through the reptilian base of their brains and whatnot. The suit looks honestly more like something a science whiz could whip up than the one from the Raimi trilogy and the web-shooters score major points. Remember Parker is a genius, something the Raimi trilogy never even tried to tap on. I have a feeling Toby "stiff-lip" Maguire's atrocious acting and Sam Raimi's cheese-ball directing will be all but forgotten come next summer.

P.S. Proto-Goblin is also a villain for this film. Also it's been confirmed Spidey will be dealing with a few more "typical" criminals than in the other films. Seems like he'll have his hands pretty full ( especially if you take the time to think about how he'll juggle his life as Peter and his life as Spider-Man) This movie definitely seems to be more on point with how Peter's life is in the comics. Don't judge before you've seen it.

K', now you're getting me psyched. I like the Garfield kid playing the role, and as I said I hope this is a "Shed" take on the Lizard IN CONCEPT, but not in visuals.

    No Caption Provided

Because he can look really silly in labcoat and all - too human and you get 'Crocodile-Man', too lizardy and you get one of the Godzilla remake's junior hatchlings.
And even with Proto Goblin now confirmed, we have two ground-based villains:

One red, one green; the colors of Christmas...
I want to believe, King, but I think you are more imaginative concerning, and more knowledgeable about, Spider-Man lore than the team on the movie. Marc Webb has done 500 Days of Summer - that's it. For the heavy FX involved, I'd like someone more experienced, although he is an expert at music videos, so who knows, could be the next Ridley Scott...

I just don't see them being true to the reptile brain angle, though I hope so; I've just been hurt too many times (Spider-Man th-th-three... >>>sob<<<) by poor depictions of Venom, Bane, Mr. Freeze, the list goes on.

Basically, I'm softening the blow if it comes, and making the experience even more enjoyable if it doesn't!      ('_-)

I'm being hopeful for this one. I am one of the few people who's always liked The Lizard but that isn't enough for the new Spidey movie, more people have to not only like him but everything else that will be involved. I have liked the fact they took the Steve Ditko approach regarding Peter Parker, and the few pics I've seen of Spider-Man in costume all make me think back to the classic Amazing Spider-Man early issues. Which is what I was hoping for. I think after the last Spidey movie, which we all know had its ups and downs, something "new" is needed.

I agree with Turoksonofstone to a degree, in a perfect world, if this bombs, then one would hope that Sony would relinquish the rights back to Marvel, but you know what? I sincerely doubt that would happen. They can manage to milk this cash cow even if any subsequent Spider-Man movies are turds, because they know people will still go see the movies.

While I am not too fond of Fox and Sony respectively latching onto the properties of Marvel still, I am holding out hope for this latest Spider-Man installment, and actually am leaning toward it being decent.

I agree, this is gonna be crap.  Number one, Garfield doesn't remotely look like Peter Parker.  It feels like they're dumbing Spider-man down to kiddie level.  The series as couple years ago was fine!  It wasn't perfect, but I wasn't going to go as far as slaughtering another series!
And the web-shooters...oh gosh...I hate those things.  I don't know why..it just seems to limit him too much.
I'm freaking out about this. Marvel was doing so well and now-- idk...we'll just have to wait with bated breath

lets wait and see, the costume looks like that because supposed to be a literal home made costume, the one from tobey's days looked like it was engineered in some secret government lab. This is more realistic to what spidey could get his hands on...

It will be good. Andrew Garfield is a pretty decent actor and comes off as someone interested in acting rather than the applause. I kind of like the way the suit is, so I don't see why people wish him to wear something as ridiculous as the silver-webbed nonsense from the other films. In fact, I wish they had given him webbed underwear on the outside to prove a point. Actual webshooters, Spider-Man in his high school days, Gwen Stacy being beautiful and a villain who isn't one-dimensional filler. Also in the spirit of the general tone, I call Peter Parker knocking Flash Thompson out in a boxing match at the end of the movie instead of pointless web swinging and zipping with corny dialogue.

The Lizard is a pretty good character to start off with and he's damned-near immortal. Despite my hatred for the way McFarlane drew Spider-Man, the way he portrayed the Lizard was the perfect embodiment of something creeping in the shadows and still remaining true to the original concept. Later artists tried too hard to make him look like a dinosaur. It's how the Lizard will be portrayed, no doubt in my mind.

I have faith that it will be good.

I have faith in you guys - in the approaches YOU ALL would take, the same as I would...
    BUT...
Hollywood is making it. A director who has done 500 Days of Summer and infinite music videos, but no real special FX movie experience. Think about how the FX in the prior films were good, but not always great for Spidey - this from a very experienced director with Dykstra-Flex camera innovations.

And don't tell me he's read even one Spider-Man comic! You are exactly right about MacFarlane's non-costume characters (they're doughy, over-scribbly), but Spidey and, yes, Lizard never looked better - and they won't go for this look, just like they didn't give us MacFarlane Venom, but the asinine tube-tongued fat-suit version.

Dark Knight has shown us that the best villains realistic and devilishly clever. In S1, we had a war profiteer/scientist/executive steal some demos to gain enhanced strength and a glider to fly on; S2, a scientistic whose robotic arms fuse to his nervous system, who can climb walls, throw cars, and grab you from around corners

Amazing Spider-Man has these two, running on the ground

Just being brutally honest - I had a sub to X-Men during the whole people to lizards arc recently - bleagh.

Watching a red and a green monster chase Spider-Man around like cats chasing Tarzan - ehhh.

Now, to rehab everyone back to hope, the darker tone - sounds great...
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone - sounds great
Two NEW (to screen) villains - sounds great
Science whiz with webshooters - sounds great
The possibility the Lizard could have a Shed storyline or at least a fight scene like this:

@Cervantes: Well... I have to agree that the suit does suck... I thought I was the only one that didn't like it...
I have no problem with Gwen and her dad being in the movie... It makes sense.  She was Spider-Man's first real love...  And Captain Stacey was one of the first people to figure out that Peter Parker was Spider-Man (or so it was implied.)

The Lizard COULD be a good villain.  It depends on the writing and the acting... Consider how good Dark Knight was.  The Joker was the only villain and DAYUM he was good...  He COULD be a great villain if done right; NOT cheesy...   But, if the costume is any indication of how seriously they are taking being true to the character of Spider-Man...It does not bode well...

I'd agree with the OP, but X-Men First Class taught me to NEVER judge a movie like that before it comes out ever again.

@Cervantes: Predicting something being hyped by the media won't live up to expectations? Whoa, risky! ;)

Let's hope it sucks so Disney can get the rights back and fold him into the Marvel films.
This 100000000 times, Marvel Studios is showing they can make good movies on their own they need their characters back.

And that's the problem I only alluded to - the criminal mind needs to be a threat to Spider-Man! He was up against two doctors in the first two movies, two dumb lugs in the third - which was more threatening? This movie is going to have a lowly employee who gets dosed be Proto, leaving the Lizard, Curt Connors. A doctor, yes, but when he's the Lizard, he loses his smarts - or worse, does that "I'm a cold-blooded lizard, you're warm-blooded, Hssss.." thing. Joker had a genuinely disturbing mind set and value system that DIRECTLY threatened Batman's, and was frightening in and of itself.

This looks to be two earthbound, feral villains, one a weregoblin, the other a werelizard; meh...

Plus, like G-Man said on the podcast, his mask in close-up looks like a basketball!  :P

But keep hope alive, I just would have loved Mysterio and Will O' the Wisp (but change the name or just call him "Dr. Arvad")

First of all, gritty Spider-Man=suck! Spider-Man is supposed to be pretty much the opposite of Gritty. If we have all our heroes be grittier, than it gets boring, and Spider-Man needs to stay light hearted and funny. Second, I agree that the Lizard is a good option for a vilian, He cam out in Amazing Spider-Man #6, and he was prety cool. Third of all, why does some one have to be a science whiz to make a simple cloth costume ike Spider-Man's? If it was one of his more recent technological costumes, I would agree, but this is original costume. Fourth, the Raimi series did touch on Peter's intellect alot especially in the second one, when he had alot of Scientific discussions with Otto. Fifth, I think Tobey(not Toby) did a pretty good job of being Spidey, and Sam Raimi is accustomed to being a little cheesy from the Evil Dead Series (great series by the way), and Spider-Man is supposed to be a little cheesy. Also, with the Batman series, of course the new trilogy did much better, the three before it sucked so much, with bat nipples and such, and you can't make the same comparison with the Spider-Man movies, because the three Spider-Man movies were actually pretty good. The new costume for this Spidey series looks like a stretched out red and blue basket ball, why are his finger tips blue, and the eyes in the mask are way to small. If theres No J. Jonah  Jameson like someone stated, this movie will be so much worse. There are way too many Goblins around now, get new villians please!!! Like Kraven, Mysterio, Rhino, Carnage, Vulture, and others to  be in them! I do like Gwen Stacy better than Mary Jane so theres a plus.
