Who played the character better in your opinion? Who is the stronger actor, more likeable, closer to the comic character ect.
Spider-Man
Character » Spider-Man appears in 17252 issues.
Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter learned that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became Spider-Man.
Andrew Garfield vs Tobey Maguire
@transformers1024: Yeah I'm sure its gotten old at this point, sorry, I'm new here! Plus I'm just curious of as to what people have to say!
And I agree, Garfield is superior.
I like Maguire better, sure Garfield looks more like a teen, but Maguire was really able to embody Peter's nerdyness, Garfeid just seems way to cool to be the outcast Peter is.
@zathango: Also welcome to Comic Vine, always nice to meet someone new :)
@captainmarvel4ever: I have to agree that Tobey did get the nerdyness better than Andrew.
Andrew seemed a bit to "hip" at times, however he rocked the Spider-man aspect of the role, in my opinion
And thank you for the welcoming!
@zathango: Yeah, I think Maguire is the better Peter, and Garfield is the better Spider-Man.
No prob, like I always say, comic fans have to look out for one another, and it's always good to have another one around.
@zathango: Yeah, I think Maguire is the better Peter, and Garfield is the better Spider-Man.
Couldn't have said it better myself
Andrew its a better actor and its playing more with the role.
Maguire has the advantage he came first.
But Andrew all the way, also some one should stick a thread about this to stop all the threads about this.
Let's pretend that the comics don't exist. There, doesn't that take a load off of you?
Now, overrall as a character, Tobey was superior. He's nice, but he can be selfish at times. Andrew can be too much of an *ss sometimes. He leaves his own aunt alone at *insert name I forgot* I mean, what the fvck? I mean, I know he's learning responsibilty and all that, but he's 16 and all he has is his aunt and uncle, what if something happened to her? Tobey's character was never like that. Also, I could care less what you guys say about how not funny he was. He was funny. Get over it. Also, Tobey's Spider-man actually made mistakes unlike Andrew's. Was it Andrew's fault that Ben died? No, you silly goose, it was Ben's! He tried to steal the gun from the robber when he clearly knows he's like 60 or something. Was it Andrew's fault Gwen died? No, you sill goose! It was Gwen who decided to go fight Electro with Spider-man like an idiot.
But I still like Andrew's more confident Spider-man like I said before. Tobey's just way more superior overall.
I like Andrew Garfield better more, Never really cared for Tobey Maguire. I still like him has an actor thought.
Garfield stomps.
This. And it's done constantly.
Jmarshmallow
Tobey's spider-man is outdated and draws fro Spider-man's very early appearances. In reality Spider-man hasn't acted like Tobey does in DECADES. Andrew's peter parker and spider-man is much more in inline with the comics. His spider-man in particular is probably the best ever put on screen
Andrew. no conest. you all can agree that he was like the ditko and romita versions even by the deleted scenes

Garfield is a great Spider-Man
Spider-Man is supposed to be a nerd, but the definition of nerd has changed a lot. Tobey Maguire played the character straight out of the sixties, which was fine, he played the character the movie was meant for and did a fantastic job and made a great series. To us Andrew might seem 'cool', but he still has the core in tact, that of an outcast. So in the 60s they had "nerds", today they have whatever Andrew was. TASM series was just modernized, it kept Peter Parker's character in tact.

"Nerdy" is subjective and mostly concerned with what time period it's based off. Today's "nerd" is soooo stupidly different to what people assumed was a nerd back in the 60's, or even twenty years ago.
Andrew Garfield was excellent. I wouldn't go as far as to say he was the definitive Spider-Man, but he put a lot of effort into the role.
Tobey Maguire was a mess. Frankly, he is a terrible actor. I can't stress how bad he is or how much he rides Leonardo Dicaprio's coattails in Hollywood. Hopefully, he'll overdose on milk and cookies. Effing vegetarian.
Andrew Garfield
Same. Tobey just never nailed it for me, Garfiled did, alongside Emma (bad films, good leads)
Garfield easily. And I would have preferred if they had kept him instead of rebooting again. Going back, Maguire's scenes are painful to watch, he comes off as overly winy and annoying. Garfield came off as intelligent, witty but still socially awkward a great Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Just fixed my post because I was implying Emma did'nt nail Gwen when she did (well, the version she was saddled with, which is slightly different from the Gwen of the comics)

The Andrew Garfield version of Peter was different from the comics but he did good in the role. this is not a criticism of what you said, I am just saying they both did good with what they were given.

Yeah, I agree with you that they were fine in the roles despite the differences, just fixing a missing part of my sentence is all.
you see with every fictional character whether it'd be in cartoons, movies, shows, mangas, comics, and animes i've seen many socially awkward characters and tobey is not even a comparison to any of them. not even close. i've also noticed socially awkward geeks and people and i myself have been one and i don't believe they were close to maguire either. with the whole nerd aspect all i see is just an exagerration probably based on their low self esteem or something but i don't think even some have a low self esteem either. all i see is just laziness. and even when i was a kid i really did not like tobey as peter as there was something odd about him and years later i can see why. the guy lacked any charm, charisma, sarcasm, wit, and humanity of peter parker nor any of the socially awkward characters. it's actually because of him people think peter has always been an incredibly meek guy when he's clearly not. and that actually goes for the other characters in fiction.
tobey- the first two original were good movies while the asm movies were like a poor man's version of them. plus andrew cried like 10x more than tobey -thats not cool
I thought Garfield was the better Spiderman without a doubt and his chemistry Emma Stone (who also nailed it) as Gwen was fantastic. It's not his fault he was lumbered with mediocre scripts and they had Peter as a 16yr old which he was too old for.
I thought Maguire looked better as geeky/nerd Peter, which lets face it Garfield is too good looking for but there are 1000's of TV shows and movies where the so called Outcast is played by good looking models. He's not the first and won't be the last so it doesn't bother me that much.
