Spidey Takes Gotham
I don't personally like the idea of Spider-Man being/acting like Batman, but this series has shown me that a Batman style tale can work for Peter. Really well too. To the point that if the actual Batman was more like the Spider-Man version of Batman, I'd read his comics way more often.
(Now that I've upset some Spider-Man and Batman fans, let's start the review.)
I mentioned in my review of the first issue that the story here really isn't anything new. But that hasn't bothered me nearly as much as I thought it would. The story is told so well that I completely forget about the fact that I've seen, heard, and read it before. That, in combination with the clever incorporation of Spider-Man and all his "buddies", makes this a fresh take on a classic setup.
My fears regarding the art getting in the way of the action turned out to be mostly unfounded. We get to see a few action scenes here and they're all pretty coherent with only a few hazy slip ups.
As is often the practice with limited series, we get a cliffhanger ending. It's not quite as shocking as the one for issue 2 (which, upon seeing, I blurted out "Holy crap!") but it's much creepier and way more disturbing. It did a great job of making me want to read the next issue and I had to exercise a measure of restraint usually reserved for keeping me from eating the entire layer of frosting on a cake to get me to write this review before reading the conclusion.
I think that speaks for itself.
