    Spawn (Simmons)

Character » Spawn (Simmons) appears in 1430 issues.

A highly trained assassin, murdered by his employer and former friend Chapel. Albert ''Al'' Francis Simmons sold his soul to Malebolgia, one of the many rulers of the Hell, in order to see his wife Wanda Blake again. Malebolgia had other things in mind for Al and sent him back to earth with no memory as a Hellspawn, one of his soldiers, to do his bidding. After realizing what he had lost, Al swore revenge, and became the vigilante known as Spawn.

I want to read Spawn chronologically! Help!

The story is simple, I want to start reading Spawn in TPB but I see so many different Spawn titles. I don't know which ones I'd have to read first or last in order to read Spawn chronologically. Does anyone have a list that puts all of the graphic novels in order?

Thanks for the help. I was looking for something like that. I appreciate it.

I also kind of want to know when all of those other Spawn titles with the surnames fit into the mythos' timeline.

actually, those volumes are very hard to find. if you read the main spawn series in order you should be fine. most of the other series (like curse of spawn) arent directly involved with the main story. most of the team ups (like spawn/batman) are unrelated as well and honestly usually not that great.

i would recommend the spawn origins trades. they go in order and they arent that expensive either.

Origins is not the original series though. it's an updated version of the Origin.

no it is the original series. ive read actual back copies of spawn and the trades, they are one in the same except maybe some enhanced coloring and small things like that. theyre reprints of the original 1992 series, spawn

The issues are compressed for a streamlined origin story, that was the whole point behind them relasing origin was to make it more accessible. There is not important stuff missing, but small things. And if your as big as a fan of Spawn as me it can be a bit annoying. not that origins is bad, but I recommend the Original trade collections.

It's the original. I have the first four. It just reprints the original.

BTW, Spawn Collection #1 has gone out of print. They don't make it anymore. Just get the first Spawn Origins hardcover instead. It has the exact same issues as Collection #1.

This is a complete reading order I've put together and have been updating it as time passes. It has taken a long time because I had to read every single issue of Spawn and all the related titles. I did my very very best putting only the most story essential titles in. This is NOT a chronological order of the series. This is an order that presents the characters, themes, and story in the most coherent fashion. Many of the issues that chronologically come first would spoil some of the biggest secrets in the series, plus for new readers many of the terminology and themes would not make sense without the proper introduction through the main series. I've also added notes to clarify to those familiar to these titles on why I placed them the way I did.

I have read ALL THESE ISSUES and have concluded this list is the most complete order on the internet as of now. I looked for other reading orders and couldn't find any coherent ones. Many of them had several issues out of order or introduced things I hadn't read about in the main book so I didn't understand the reference. It frustrates me when I read something out of order and spoil all of the previous surprises that would've been fun to read. So here I give you my reading order for one of the greatest super heroes of all time, SPAWN!

@kingwillie: Thank you! I like to think of myself as a Spawn expert. I've been trying really hard to get this list around the internet, posting in forums and stuff. I was so frustrated reading the whole thing out of order, I didn't want anyone else to get a messed up story like I did. Spawn's whole run is such a great story. I really think it should be read this way.

Is there news anywhere that I'm just missing with regards to continuing the TPB release of Spawn Origins? More to the point, is anyone aware of ANY plan to release issues 123-149 in TPB format? I don't have all of the collected issues before these ones yet, but I would kind of feel silly at this stage to purchase up to 122 and then sit in limbo not able to reach Armageddon and onward until I have the time and money to gather the individual issues.
