The Rush Report: Spawn/Batman
Frank Miller and Todd McFarlane team up to create a rare crossover of the undead Spawn and iconic Batman! Batman has to make a trip to New York to track down the source of a Soviet Cyborg. What will happen when he steps into Spawns alleyways?
THE GOOD
The story they came up with was a good little detective story that was done in a way that made it believable for the characters to crossover. Miller and McFarlane did a great job of blending the gritty/gruesome feeling that the Spawn world has and the more classic super hero/detective elements that comes from Batman. For instance there's a great fight where it goes from straight punches and kicks to a classic black panel with words like WHUK, THUD, SWAK! Then it's transitioned into the typical blood splattering ways of Spawn. Half way through the book there's an amazing two page spread of Spawn/Batman that must be seen.
THE BAD
So my main issue with this book was I didn't feel like they stayed true to the characters. Spawn was much more level headed and calm when he's really more of a kill first ask questions later kinda guy. Batman came across a little sloppy kind of like its someone pretending to be Batman. he's also way more chatty than he should be always referring to Spawn as a punk. There was a few inconsistencies with Spawn wearing his mask in one frame but not the next.
VERDICT
It was a fun little story that could make a decent animated short and is more of a must read for hardcore Spawn fans rather then Batman fans. The way the characters came across really bothered me to the point it took away from the overall experience. I enjoyed the book but I can only give this one a 3/5.
