They have similarities, but they aren't really great. The Sonic characters have characteristics which make them completely different from the Dragonball characters.
Sonic/Goku: Sonic is described by Sega as a character who is "like the wind" -- a drifter who lives as he wants and makes life a series of events and adventures. But what's make him different from Goku is that, despite his easy-going character, he has a short temper and is impatient with slow stuff. He often likes things done faster and it's a rare case that you'll see him patiently wait.
Shadow/Vegeta: There is a similarity between Shadow and Vegeta, but only at some points. Shadow was ever since a hero way before Sonic's time. He just turned into a villain after he was re-programmed by Dr. Gerald Robotnik to carry out his plan to take revenge in Sonic Adventure 2, then turned back to a hero after recalling his promise to Maria. Also, Shadow is emotion- or thought-driven and too determined to have the task done. While Vegeta cared so much about defeating Goku, Shadow never cared about defeating Sonic or anyone else at all. Instead, he only cared much about accomplishing the task/mission. His experience and knowledge, which surpass that of Sonic's, as well as being originally conceived as the opposite version of Sonic also what makes him different from Vegeta.
The Supers in the Sonic series: Unlike the Saiyans, the characters need the Chaos Emeralds to go Super instead of being able to do it for themselves. What's more unique about it is the Chaos Emeralds themselves. Chaos Emeralds turn thoughts and feelings into power. Going Super requires all of the 7 Emeralds as well as great concentration with one's thoughts and feelings (that's why the characters close their eyes and concentrate a lot while the Emeralds revolve around them when going Super; as for shouting, it's just a characteristic of a first-time Super). These thoughts/feelings then turned into power for the character to go Super. Also, Super form isn't exclusive to the hedgehogs, and most of all the hedgehogs aren't really the most powerful of their universe. Heard of Super Knuckles and Super Tails? Other characters who used the power of all 7 Emeralds like Chaos (from Sonic Adventure), Black Doom (from Shadow the Hedgehog) and even Metal Sonic, the robotic counterpart of Sonic, are already considered Supers (only that, instead of the gold glowing look, they have a monstrous or demonic or more evolved/improved look and has a different Super name instead of just their original names with the prefix "Super").
As for the Super Saiyans, Super Saiyan Goku first appeared in the 67th episode of the Dragonball Z series. This episode originally aired in November 14, 1990, some two years earlier than Super Sonic's first appearance. I can agree that the Super Sonic thing is a homage to the Super Saiyan idea, than a copy. One of the creators of Sonic/Super Sonic is a DBZ fan, after all lol. I can also say the same way for the Chaos Emeralds (7 Chaos Emeralds = 7 Dragon Balls), but there is a great difference between them and the number of the Emeralds was originally 6 than 7 (or more, according to the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game) so I can be wrong.
I've also noticed that what seems to be the second most powerful race in Sonic's Universe, Echidnas have some similarities to the Namkians.
Echidnas/Namekians: Both are consider the second most powerful race(overall) and are guardians over the most powerful items. The Namekians created and guard the dragonballs, while the Echidnas guard the "emeralds" The Dragonballs from Namek are much larger than the ones on Earth, the Master Emerald is much larger than the Chaos Emeralds. Kame(Namekian and creator of Earth's Dragonballs) lives on a floating island in the sky. Knuckles(guardian of the Master Emerald) lives on a floatin island in the sky.
"Actually Super Sonic came before Super Sayin."That was already said. About a page ago.
well the episode is called : transformed at last. air date: june, 19,1991. funny thing that you said Yuji Naka copy dbz, because a few days ago i found this out : Super Sonic is believed by some to be a homage to the Super Saiyans in Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball. Yuji Naka is a self-confessed fan of the Dragon Ball series. got this from a site called sonic wikia.
Yes, Sonic took a few aspects of DBZ, A Few aspects. It took a few aspects from other material star wars, terminator, Marvel, DC and etc. We can break down any character to see where it is based on, which will be good forum to make. The first thought of sonic was to be Mickey Mouse but punk.
What about Metal Sonic and Amy they are hedgehogs too. Metal Sonic take aspect of the terminator of being relentless for hunting down and destroying Sonic. The android have that aspect but not like metal sonic. Archie and Fleetway are more creative with this character as mass produce of him being soulless killing machine. There are exceptions with a few version of it of it but he didn’t wimp out like other DBZ villains. In the Sonic Movie he would rather die than accepting help from Sonic. His last words are “there is only one Sonic”.
Amy uses hammer in Sonic Adventure, which takes aspect of Thor, Kodocha or any Loony Tunes character. The hearts coming out provides a new touch. U.S and U.K improve her big time. The difference are quit large compared to Japanese version of her. She is 11 years old fan girl but she in a 17 year body in Archie comics. She is marksman who is smarter than she looks but has bad luck in the Fleetway comics. Sakura from Naruto took aspects of her personality but it took allot more time to be a decent character.
The manga where Goku turns Super Saiyan came out August 7, 1991.
But ofcoarse was in black and white.. So i don't know if that matters dealing with the 'gold hair, gold aura' problem.
But i am sure the idea and sketches of a 'Super Saiyan' came way before.
@Vance Astro: sonic is no rip off goku is in a cartoon sonic was made to be a video game icon for sega and there both from japan and most thing s from japan are alike so never acuse sonic of bieng a goku ripoff please
This topic has stated Sonic = Dragonball. That is calling Sonic a ripoff. That is what causing anger. What you stated is belittlement to the Sonic franchise. I haven’t even mention Archie and Fleetway which deviated from the source and thank goodness they did. Has anyone here read the comics which were inspired by Sonic Satam?
We can go on the differences but the point stands that you need to know. The topic is not having similarities it stating that Sonic completely copies Dragonball. Now the fan bases from both sides are mostly uncivilized messes that have short tempers which are trying to fix themselves. If you are trying to be thorough you would notice the big differences and be careful with your words which you have yet apologized, or even make a correction.
LOL these are the most shallow comparisons I've ever heard.
Are people going to bring up how Toriyama got some of the inspiration for Goku from Superman?
Are we going to have the whole argument that Saiyains are analogies for black people or jewish people again? I mean yeah we can make tangible connections but lets not go overboard.
Good grief the sonic universe has so many diferences from the DB/DBZ universe I don't know where to begin.
Yes Sonic turning gold is clearly ripping off/paying tribute to DBZ, but its become such a common trope now. I mean how many shows/comics/manga do we have where a character transforms taking his power to the next level. this medium tend sot take inspiration from other works now and than it happens.
7 dragonballs 7 chaos emeralds
powered up golden forms
Silver haired person from the future.
Silver has to be shadows son as black doom has the same power silver does at least to some extent and during 06 the only hedgehogs left were shadow and amy.
Villain turned rival turned good Knuckles/Piccolo
Rival is member of a race thought to be extinct
other rival turned good Shadow/Vegeta
You have to fight your source of power /chaosemeralds/dragonballs = Chaos/Evil shenron dragons.
Trunks and silver are both curious about the past and determined to save the future.
Vegeta and shadow both have lost people are willing to put down anyone who gets in their way and are misunderstood heroes.
Sonic and goku carefree heroes with a love of adventure and a pure heart and ability to turn enemies into friends.
All the similarities between Dragon Ball and Sonic the Hedgehog are common tropes in Japan. Also, I believe Yuji Naka and the creator of Dragon Ball were friends.
Virtually all anime characters have spikey hair. The character tropes are very common tropes in anime. Super Sonic and Super Sayians were based on the Japanese legend called "The Golden Warrior" or something like that. Having transformations with an aurora around them and hair color changing is also common in Japan. When asked whether or not Super Sonic was based on Dragon Ball Z, Yuji Naka denied it. Its questionable whether Super Sonic could've been added to the game so quickly, since Sonic 2 was released so shortly after Super Sayian first appeared.
Seven magical items is a common trope in Anime, seven is a very important number in numerology, often representing perfection. Also, the Dragon Balls allows the user to grant any wish, while the Chaos Emeralds give out infinite magical energy, so they don't even operate under the same rules.
Sonic has more obvious inspirations from Star Wars and Castle in the Sky.
@superadam:No sonic has obvious inspirations from dragon ball Z, even freaking creator of sonic said he was fan of DBZ, (Sonic was originated in JAPAN for those who don't know).
All the freaking characters in sonic has same as that of dbz hands down!
what does it mean same roles - it means they are not ripped off
But will have similar behaviors (similar role kinda similar not perfectly similar) but that's quite common in japanese manga industry.
