Jeff Stewart's plan to get the gold out of the county works, but when he returns with the proceeds, a court order demands the money be impounded until it can be properly taxed. Jeff agrees to sign it over but then slips it to Kate behind the Mail counter. Now in the custody of the Federal Government, Kate refuses to turn it back over to the local sheriff. The sheriff arrests Jeff and the judge sentences him to thirty days in jail, with an additional thirty days for each time he tries to speak. Jeff manages to handcuff the sheriff and escape on horseback, but the deputies pursue him.
