In the first episode of 'Son of Zorro', Jeff Stewart returns home from the Civil War. He learns from an old friend that corrupt politicians have taken advantage of the men being off at war to take control of the county. They've imposed severely high property taxes in order to seize lands and put a toll station on the only route in or out through the mountains to further line their pockets. With no legal recourse left to him, he dons the mask of Zorro at the urging of his ranch foreman Pancho.
