    Production

After the success of The Mask, there was supposed to be a 1995 sequel featuring Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz and even had a Nintendo Power magazine promotion where the winner would be an extra but was scrapped since Carrey wasn't interested in sequels at the time. As a result, the winner was given an amount of cash. Lance Khazei had written a script called "Baby Formula" and was retooled into Son of the Mask. A teaser trailer was released for screenings of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) and a trailer was released for screenings of several late 2004 films.

    Reception

Son of the Mask was a financial and critical flop. Many have unfavorably compared Jamie Kennedy's performance as Tim Avery to Jim Carrey's performance as Stanley Ipkiss. The only thing critics and fans liked was Alan Cumming's performance as Loki as well as some well-animated hand-drawn scenes. Over time, people think of it as love letter to the Tex Avery/Chuck Jones era of animation instead of a terrible Mask sequel. Because of this, Jamie Kennedy made a documentary called Heckler (2007) where he talks about how unhappy he is regarding the criticism of the film as well as destructive criticism in general.
