Solomon Grundy

Solomon Grundy is a comic book character that first appeared in All-American Comics #61

Solomon Grundy is a reanimated corpse. He has had many appearances in which he has different levels of strength and intelligence.

History

Cyrus Gold, a gangster in the late 19th century, was killed and thrown in the Slaughter Swamp in Gotham. Chemicals that have been poured into the swamp brought him back to life, more as a decomposed swamp monster than a human.

He  lost almost all memory of his past life and finds a homeless shelter to live in. When asked about his past life all he can remember is that he was born on a Monday so he was called Solomon Grundy after the old rhyme which goes:

Solomon Grundy,

Born on a Monday,

Christened on Tuesday,

Married on Wednesday,

Took ill on Thursday,

Grew worse on Friday,

Died on Saturday,

Buried on Sunday.

That was the end of

Solomon Grundy.

He has been a frequent foe of Batman and Green Arrow, though he has fought other heroes. Green Lantern Alan Scott originally had no power over him because he had wood in his body.

Solomon Grundy was a member of several incarnations of the Injustice Society.

Faces of Evil: Grundy

When the physical form of Solomon Grundy died on Hell Planet during Salvation Run, Cyrus Gold was able to come back to life, this time in his human form.  He starts to become aware of his surrounding environment and realize how much time has past since he was killed.  He goes and sees his old home while being haunted by images of himself killing his uncle.  He asks for forgiveness when the words to the Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme start going through his head.  He starts beating on a woman who tries to get him to go to a homeless shelter when the police show up and shoot him.  He runs away while yelling that he can't die before getting hit by an oncoming truck.  His body is taken to the morgue where his death certificate is filled out as "Name: Unknown" and "Day: Sunday".  At midnight, Gold's body transforms into Grundy and kills the morgue attendant while saying, "Solomon Grundy, Born on a Monday!"

We watch Grundy as he creates a path of destruction through Gotham City over the following week.  As he lies dying in the sewer on Saturday night, just a few minutes until midnight, when he is confronted by Killer Croc.  During thier fight, Grundy hears Gold's voice in his head and tells him to get out.  Grundy snaps Croc's jaw and leaves him to die when the clock hits midnight.  Grundy doesn't die, but instead turns back into Cyrus Gold, before falling asleep.  He is awakened a little while later by the Phantom Stranger, telling Gold that he has seven days to break the curse of Solomon Grundy for good.  The Stranger says that he cannot guide him, but Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, can.  Green Lantern doesn't like it, but the Stranger says that there is an unholy night coming that is as black as the undead's blood, and that Solomon Grundy shouldn't be around for it.

Portrayal

There are many versions of Solomon Grundy. He is sometimes intelligent, sometimes and sometimes kind, but he is usually portrayed as a villain. His average appearance is as a hulking brute. He does transform back into Cyrus Gold from time to time as well.

Powers

Grundy has superhuman strength and also endurance. His strength has varied through the years and at one point not even the one and only Superman could restrain him. He is virtually indestructible thanks to the elemental energy that imbues his form with pseudo-life. He is nearly invulnerable to physical and energy attacks and he is not affected by fire or cold. He does not need to eat, sleep or breathe.  Grundy is immortal due to the fact that when he is destroyed/killed he always comes back to life sooner or later.

Grundy in other media

The DC Animated Universe has a different story line than other comics. The comics are based on the TV shows and are part of the same universe. In the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoons Solomon is his typical large and moronic self. He joins many supervillain groups lead by both Lex Luther and others. What changes is when In the episodes the Terror Beyond parts one and two Solomon goes on a quest to get back his soul and on the way teams up with an unlikely band of Superman, Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman and Dr. Fate. On their journey Solomon make friends with Hawkgirl and later dies in her arms. Solomons dieing concern is weather he got his soul back. Hawkgirl doesn't believe in souls the way Solomon does but she lies to him so he can die happy. He is later reanimated by some fan-boys in the episode Wake the dead. When he is reanimated he becomes more evil and stronger than before. No one in the Justice League can stop him except Hawkgirl. The reason for this is because of the magical properties of her mace. In the end it is up to her to put him down and in another sad scene she takes him out. The scene is very reminiscent of the book of Mice and men when George kills Lenny. The death however is not shown on camera. Hawkgirl just says she took care of it and he is never seen again.
