    Origin

Smoker was born on the East Blue Sea Island known as Loguetown. It was famous for being the birthplace of Gold Roger, the man who conquered the Grand Line and became King of the Pirates. As a young boy, Smoker was present after Gold Roger was captured by the Marines and brought to Loguetown for his execution. He was shocked to see that Gold Roger didn't seem like a man defeated. He was shackled but walking through the streets as a hero and smiling. As he was about to be executed, he made the declaration that ignited the Great Pirate Era.

Loguetown was often overrun by pirates from the East Blue trying to go to the Grand Line to claim One Piece. Smoker joined the Marines as he grew up and at some time ate the Smoke-Smoke Devil Fruit. While in the Marines he wasn't what some would call a team player and was nearly expelled several times. Most of Marine command saw him as a trouble maker, and was stationed to his hometown once he reached the rank of captain.

    Loguetown Arc

Pirates were still coming to Loguetown, even twenty years after Gold Roger's death, but Smoker stopped all would-be pirates with the help of his young subordinate, Tashigi. Though most of the people were intimidated by Smoker, he cared deeply about them. When a little girl ran into him, spilling her ice cream on his pants, he gave her the money to buy a double scoop. Smoker went to the execution ground when he heard there was a pirate atop the gallows where Gold Roger died. He found the young pirate Straw Hat Luffy. captured by Buggy the Clown and joined by Alvida. Smoker planned a trap but watched as Buggy was ready to kill Luffy at the top of the execution grounds. To Smoker's surprise, Luffy was smiling in the face of certain death, just as he saw with Gold Roger. Luffy was still saved by a freak lightening strike and escaped the courtyard with his crew.

Smoker cut off Luffy to capture him. His crew ran on and Luffy clashed with Smoker. The young pirate was of little threat from Smoker's Logia powers. Just as Smoker was ready to give the final blow, he was halted by a mysterious cloaked man. Luffy and the Straw Hats ran from Loguetown to the Grand Line. Smoker looked to the Revolutionary leader, Dragon; and asked why he helped Luffy. He gave no answer as he left, and Smoker gave up his position to chase the Straw Hats along with Tashigi.

Smoker and Tashigi waited in the Alabasta harbor town Nanohana. While there, Smoker came across Portgas D. Ace, a commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. Before the two could clash, Smoker was struck from behind by Luffy, who actually hadn't noticed him. Once Luffy recognized Smoker, he was off and running and mentioned that he was there after Crocodile during the chase in town. Luffy once again got away with the help of Ace's powers. The fight was a stalemate, and Ace also got away. Smoker then waited at Rain Base, Corcodile's town.

Luffy and his friends arrived and Smoker and Tashigi found them in a local store. Smoker chased after him and his crew into Crocodile's casino, and they all fell into a trap that landed them all into a Sae Prism Stone cage. While in the cage, Crocodile admitted that he had arraigned the civil war threatening to rip the country apart. Crocodile flooded the room they were in and left, but were freed by Sanji. Smoker was shocked and angry as he was saved from drowning by Roronoa Zoro. Zoro told him that he was ordered to save him by Luffy. Smoker allowed the Straw Hats to leave and he handed command of their forces to Tashigi as he left on a private mission. He ordered her to Alabasta and to follow her sense of justice.

Smoker had used the illegal Dance Powder to cause it to rain and help aid the end of the Civil War. Captain Hina arrived soon after. Tashigi returned and gave her report that Luffy defeated Crocodile, and she had let them go. He congratulated her on her hard work, and told her that if her tears of shame hurt so much that she needed to get stronger. As the Marine command contacted Smoker, he was shocked that they were giving him and Tashigi credit for defeating Crocodile's plot. He told them he refused their praise and promotions, and boldly told them to shove it.

Ace was the biological son of Gold Roger, and Fleet-Admiral Sengoku announced to the world that Luffy was the son of Dragon. As Luffy fought through the battlefield to save Ace, Smoker cut him off. They two battled once more. Though Luffy was far stronger than last time, Smoker was still stronger. Luffy only escaped due to the interference of an enraged Boa Hancock, a Seven Warlord. Smoker as helpless against Boa Hancock's combat skill and powers of Haki.

    Dawn Island Arc

The war was halted after Ace and Whitebeard were killed, Luffy was whisked away by his allies, and was put to a stop by the appearance of Red-Haired Shanks. As the island was still trying to repair after the battle, Smoker met with Admiral Aokiji to request a transfer to the New World, the second half of the Grand Line. It was the best place to be for him to wait for Luffy's return.

    Fish-Man Island Arc

In the two years that had passed since the war on Marineford, Smoker had become a Vice-Admiral and Tashigi a captain. They were stationed at the base of the Marine rejects of the G-5. Among them was the admired Vice-Admiral Vergo. While on their patrol near the Red Line, several pirate ships began popping out of the water. While Tashigi deflected the cannon fire, Smoker interrogated some of the pirates they captured. They had all been freed from slavery on Fish-Man Island by the Straw Hat Pirates.

    Punk Hazard Island Arc

Smoker and his forces waited at an island of the New World, but the Straw Hats never arrived. They did intercept a call that the Straw Hats were going to Punk Hazard, the island that was suppose to be off limits due to a poisonous gas leak several years ago. When they investigated, Smoker found there was no poison gas and a lab apparently inhabited by Trafalgar Law, the latest member of the Seven Warlords. The two began to fight when several of the Straw Hats came running out of the labs along with several children. Law's devil fruit powers were far too much for Tashigi and Smoker. He used his powers to switch their minds and bodies. The retreated to other ruined labs, and Tashigi suspected those children could be the ones she had heard were going missing.

When Smoker and Tashigi attempted to counter-attack, Luffy crashed in the middle. He was there to kidnap Caesar Clown. Smoker tried to fight Luffy in Tashigi's body but was of little effect. When Caesar appeared, Luffy nearly caught is crazy scientist, but he used his Gas-Gas Fruit powers to remove the oxygen from the area. They were all locked up and bound with sea prism stone chains. While in a cage with Luffy and Law, they all learned that Vice-Admiral Vergo is actually a spy that had been helping Caesar Clown obtain children for his experiments, and he's under the command of the underworld boss known as Joker, really Don Quixote Doflamingo. Smoker and the rest were put outside to die by the poisonous gas Caesar unleashed on the island, but Law escaped his chains and put Tashigi and Smoker back in their original bodies. They allied together, escaped back into the labs, he ordered Tashgi to take the G-5, and Smoker went after Vergo. He found him fighting with Law. Smoker fought with Vergo but as a distraction to get Law's heart back.

    Powers & Abilities

    Devil Fruit

Smoker has eaten the Smoke-Smoke Fruit (モクモクの実, Moku-Moku no Mi), a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform into smoke at will. He can turn his entire body into a mass of smoke which is comprised of high density dust particles. Each of these particles can be controlled by the user's will. They can be spun at high speeds to create boost and velocity or spread out over a wide area limited to the user's full physical mass.

The smoke can pass through normal physical attacks giving Smoker immunity to such damage. The smoke has the strength and consistency to lift and contain several hundred kilograms in weight. His body also becomes completely immune to any smoke-based carcinogens giving him the full benefit of stress relief from tobacco based products without any of the drawbacks experienced by normal humans. Elements that exist alongside smoke in nature such as fire or lava seem to have no effect as well.

    Haki

It was mentioned that all Marines with the rank of vice admiral and above, are capable of using Haki.

Busoshoku Haki: Smoker possesses the ability to use Busoshoku Haki.

    Sea Prism Stone

Sea Prism Stone is a naturally occurring metal fund in the world. Minerals from the sea are embedded into the metal. It's said that sea prism stone is as hard as diamonds, and contact to the skin will both weaken the body and cancel out all devil fruit powers. they'll be as vulnerable as any other human. This is often found crafted into shackles. Smoker is one of the few devil fruit users who uses this mineral to his advantage in his jitte weapon.

    Haki

Haki is a unique skill that all devil fruit users are vulnerable to. Armament Haki has the ability to cancel out any devil fruit power, however, the Haki of the attacker must be stronger than the target. Smoker is aware of this ability, but it's never been confirmed to be able to use any of the three types.

    Weapons & Equipment

Smoker often fights using his signature Nanashaku Jitte (七尺十手 Nanashaku Jitte). This weapon is made with Sea Prism Stone (Kairouseki) at the tip. It's an effective weapon against devil fruit users. His first jitte was destroyed by Boa Hancock, but he gained a new model soon after.
