Peter Milligan shows us we are all the same "Skin" deep

It saddens me when great comics are out of print and no one has more out of print great comics then Peter Milligan, which is sad for the medium. since Milligan is one of the best in comics.  Skin is possibly his most controversial work to date ant it was released in 1992, even after being banned and refused my many publisher until Tundra published it.  Skin is controversial because of the premise, the story is about a a young thalidomide skinhead in 1970s London, and his attempts to deal with his disability and the world in general.  You can understand why this is a sensitive topic and in the 90s comics were still breaking molds and Skin is one of those books that really pushed what a good comic can do.

The visual narrative is surreal and it really helps the story, since being a stand out would likely change perception anyway.  Tje main character is a young man name Martin 'Atchet or "Seal Boy".  This comic does not sugar coat the serious event of the thalidomide children of the 70s and as "tasteless" as some accused this book, I think it is its charm.  To water down the anger and the hate would let off the true villains easy.

Above I mentioned how it is a shame this book is out of print and I mean it.  In all honesty Skin is one of Peter Milligan's more powerful and emotionally eye opening book.  Peter Milligan ans Brendan McCarthy show us the truth and we can refuse it or accept it.  People do bad things and many get away with it.  Why should big business and big money mean more then human life?  If you ever stumble upon this book at a reasonable price, I truly recommend picking it up.  This is the type of comics that keep me reading comics, Skin pushed us and pokes us and challenges our perception of the world and the value of life.  Not enough books ripple the into the soul anymore and that is why it sucks so many great books are out of print.

    Cheers
