As a Knight of the Round Table, Sir Justin was in pursuit of two outlaws when his lance accidentally stabbed a tree - which in turn released Merlin from a magical prison.

Merlin magically transformed Justin's amour, making it lighter and bulletproof, and giving it a shining gold colour. Merlin also enchanted Sir Justin's sword and gave wings to his steed Victory.

Eventually, in pursuit of other varlets, the Shining Knight was buried in an avalanche of ice and there he remained in suspended animation until the ice melted in 1941.

Soon thereafter, he joined the 7 Soldiers of Victory and the All-Star Squadron. Justin had a relationship with fellow All-Star squadron heroin Dannettle Reilly also known as Firebrand 2. She was apparently killed by the villain Dragon King.

After this, Justin was amnesiac for several years, until his memeries returned. With the help of Stargirl, S.T.R.I.P.E, and the remainder Seven Soldiers of Victory he finally got his revenge on the Dragon King. Justin is currently a member of the Justice Society of America reserves.
